We were planning on having a legal ceremony in the DR, but after seeing how much money and time we could save we decided to do the legal ceremony in Canada. Then weâ€ll have a symbolic wedding in the DR. I know this makes the most sense, but Iâ€m still not 100% happy with it. I really donâ€t want to be married until we have the ceremony. My FI promised me that we will pretend we are not married until we have our wedding. I guess it's just not as romantic. Not really the way every girl pictures it when they are little.

Oh well, I get to marry the love of my life. I guess that's the most important thing :)

My FI was also married and we're gonna do a legal before we leave and a symbolic in mexico. everyone says it looks exactly the same and the guests won't know the difference, so I'm not telling anyone :) Just making it easier on us with the document translation, etc..

Thank you so much for this. It's good to know I'm not the only one who feels this way.

I completely agree. Also, in Ontario it can be so simple to do the legal stuff. I think its just have a JP to your house, have a witness or two, say a couple things and that's it. I remember a bride telling me that she did it in her pajamas so it didn't feel like it was her wedding at all.

So I touched on this a bit and Josh had some advice but I am hoping I can get some more. We are wanting to have a symbolic first in the DR this coming Feb and then legally getting married in the summer of 2010 at home- time/travel wise it is the only time we can make it to DR. Because all of our family won't be able to make the trip we have promised to have a small ceremony for them at home. I just can't get on board with signing the papers before the ceremony and although our ceremony in the DR would be symbolic in my heart and head we will be married at that point. Are we going to run into issues in the DR without doing it legally beforehand? I am getting mixed reviews....anything experiences??

tamadana- I think it depends if the resort requires a certificate or not. It sounds like some resorts require it while others do not. We are staying at the Majestic Elegance in the DR and they require a marriage certificate. Keep in mind that this could take up to a month to get so if you do do it early save lots of time! We had planned to get married afterwards but had to get married before (yesturday actually!). It doesnt feel like we are married yet, we arn't calling each other husband and wife or wearing our rings. And we will call our symbolic wedding day our anniversary. Its not so bad!

- If we could have we would have done the legal ceremony though. As our wedding wes just cancelled in Mexico we did not have enough time to get all of the documents legalized (it was not required in our resort in Mexico).
