Marrying before the actual DW ceremony?

Hey ladies!

Wow i signed up weeks ago but I'm a teacher so I am very busy and just had some down time and wanted to ask a question.

 

I've read it's cheaper to get married at home in the states and when we get to the DR just have the ceremony. I was told it would save us hundreds on judge and paperwork fees. Anyone know?

Hi! Ok I see that you are really new on here so I will try find some threads that answer your question for you. But the short answer is usually yes it is much cheaper and easier to get married in the States and just to have a symbolic destination wedding...

Yes it is much cheaper and hassle free. When i began searching, it was much more complicated when you get legally married in another country. They require you to do everything there before you get married, nothing can be transfered from where you live (i.e bloodwork, court documents, etc.) That's whey we are deciding on getting legally married before we leave and do a non-legal ceremony in Mexico. good luck hope this helped.

Well I am getting married in DR in about a month and suprisingly it has been hassle free.... I spent 250 dollars to get some documents and my TA faxed some paper work and thats it... I will have to send my certificate to get transfered to english once we get back... people say that can take up to 6 months to get your original but its just a piece of paper to me so I can wait.... So I was nervous and frantic but I want my real I DO to be on one day and thats it so thats how I decided....

 

I know it is really popular to do it at home.... it basically your choice

My FI and I discussed the idea and we have decided to get married in the states after the DW. I got some mixed reactions when I asked opinions on getting married before we go b/c everyone wants it to be "real". We figured that it will probably save us close to $600 by getting married in the states, plus I'm a nurse and I'm a little concerned with getting my blood drawn in Mexico . I contacted the courthouses around here and we can get married for $35!

We were originally going to have a civil ceremony in DR, but after I added up all the fees for document translation, judges fees, etc., I discovered that we would save nearly $1000 if we just get married in the states a few days before we leave. I was a little concerned at first that it would make the symbolic ceremony somehow less real or important, but I don't think it will. The legal process at home will simply be a 5 minute formality in a judges chambers with no pomp and circumstance whatsoever. Our "wedding day" will be in DR on the beach. Yes I just didn't want to hassle with traveling with documents so I will be marrying three days before my wedding in Cabo at the local courthouse.

We are having our "legal" day on September 23/09...one year to the date of our engagement. It won't be anything special...literally going to the courthouse to sign the marriage certificate. We've decided not to say any special vows and we've even said that we'll shake hands to seal the deal. It will save us approx. $800.00 to do it this way. Our "real" wedding day will be the following month and we will be celebrating our anniversary on October 27th.
