Help pls! Tungsten bands a bad idea?

Recommended Posts

My FI and I were looking at wedding bands for him, and when we came across some tungsten bands that he liked, the jeweller told us not to get them! He said that there are no tools available to cut through tungsten so if the ring becomes too small or if you get in an accident and need it cut off, the only way to do it is to use extreme heat that would burn the skin off of your finger to the bone, or to go to the hospital and have them break/dislocate your finger in order to get the ring off!

Is this total B.S.? This is the second jeweller who's warned us against tungsten, but the first one didn't go into this detail (he just said it couldn't be resized)...

Any info on this would be much appreciated!

If your hand gets smashed wearing a gold ring it can bend & crush into your finger. So it's not like any ring is safe in an accident. People who work in factories & plants are usually not allowed to wear rings for this reason.

People have called ERs to confirm they can cut off a tungsten band.

Jewlers would have a reason to discourage people from buying tungsten & titanium. They are industrial metals so they are much cheaper than gold & platinum. but, they have many advanatages & make a great ring. They just happen to be cheap. I got my husbad's for around $8 online.

jewlery stores mark them up a lot because people are already expecting to spend over $100 on the band. There is no reason to. It's a cheap metal.

Where did you buy his ring?
Thanks!

My husband has a tungsten ring. The other way to get it off is to chip the edges, which will then shatter the ring. The only con for this metal is getting a matching band in your size. If you need a ring smaller than a thin band that is smaller than a size 6 you will need to have it custom made. They cannot make anything in a thing band smaller than a size 4, but the titanium is a close enough match.

If you're FH works with his hands a lot, he shouldn't ear any type of ring while he works.

We bought my FH a stainless steel band for $99. He also has a job wear he works with his hands and we were told the same thing that it can't be cut off. However, he can't wear his ring anyway while he works, so we're not worried about it.
