starting the name change process...........

Recommended Posts

Ladies - I have one very important piece of advice. After you change your name - make sure you don't have any legacy travel sites that have your maiden name.

We went to visit my grandmother last week. When we got to the front of the line at security, they informed us that my driver's license didn't match the name on my ticket. My husband reserved the flight using my maiden name because it was on auto-save in his Travelocity account. ACK!

We were able to address it - on the way there I got to go to secondary screening and on the way back the lady at the counter changed it without any trouble (but don't expect that every time).

I never had a problem or had a need for my picture id to change anything. I had about 8 copies of my certified marriage certificate made (for changing over all my airline frequent flier programs) and that was it.

Anyway - don't let your husband or your company accidentally reserve flights under the wrong name :)

Ha! At our courthouse marriage they gave us a packet with all forms needed for state/federal name changes. They still haven't made it out of the manila envelope. You aren't alone, it will get done, eventually...

Ugghh...how lame, almost a year later and I'm just getting around to this.

So, today I got up early with my certified marriage license & name change form in tow and went to my local ss office. I got there 30 minutes before it opened just in case there was a line.

I parked and didn't even make it out of the car sad.gif I saw a long line and stopped counting at 21 people! It was really hot and humid already at 8:30 and I just couldn't see myself waiting outside to get in.

I went home called the ss people and they said I could send it all by mail, but I have to send my actual driver's license - the plastic card! They'll send it back but is that insane? At this rate I'll never be legal!

Yes! I am not alone! Does that make you feel any better??

Your experience is exactly what I went thru and made me decide that maybe I'm ok being my old self & just using my husband's name for social purposes. The first time I applied for a passport & sent my original birth certificate in & what not, IT GOT LOST IN THE MAIL on the way back to me, along with my new passport & all kinds of vital info. It's never been recovered. As such, I will never place vital docs in the mail again....(see the wheels of rationalization / justification turning??)

ROFL I seen this post pop up and I thought "hmm I thought Nicole would have changed her name before the baby was here" lol

Christa, I insured my stuff when I sent off for my new passport, with all the trouble I had the first time I had to make sure it was covered. Man I'm I glad it's behind me now.

Glad to hear I'm not the only schlub! I haven't even started, and I have to change all of my medical stuff - state license, board certification, DEA, etc. Its a complete pain, and they say that as soon as I change my SS card, I have to IMMEDIATELY change everything else. I need to get all of my ducks in a row and take a few days to get everything switched over. Just probably isn't going to happen until I have about a week off... lol!

Most docs don't change their names, but its really important to my DH, so I don't mind doing it...

Although I don't have to worry about this yet, I came across this thread and decided to have a look. In some of the older posts I noticed that some people had to get their marriage certificate translated and others didn't. My MOH works in a DMV up here in Canada and I recently talked to her about this. Our friends that got married in Cuba Nov 06 are still waiting to get their translated Marriage certificate back, and she was trying to change her name before getting her new passport for our wedding. She went to the DMV in town here and they wouldn't do it without the translated copy, but they had for another couple. Apparently, if they can't confirm that it is real, they don't have to do it. I talked to my MOH since she knew that we went down there for the wedding and our little girl was the FG, and she said she would take it in spanish. Hope this helps anyone else that may run into this. Check with your DMV or maybe a couple of them to see if they will take the spanish one before sending it off to be translated.

Jamie- you have to mail in your driver's license? On my social security forms it said just a certified copy of the marriage license? That's weird- is that a state thing because I thought SS was a federal thing?

Anyways- I waited for what felt like 2 hours when I went. Biggest PIA. Now I have 2 names because I haven't converted everything over. I just got my new driver's license and I forget to sign papers in my NEW name. Argh- the pain us women always have to go through.
