How to take my wedding dress on the airplane

We are also flying Air Transat so thats good to know!  Did your dress count as your carry on or were you allowed another carry on along with your dress?

I chose to play "dumb" and brought my dress in a garment bag (even though another bride on the flight was told to pack hers!!!! She was pissed when she saw me with my dress.) I told the check-in that I wanted to bring it as carry-on and they let me.

I flew Air Transat and there were no closest, BUT what we did was lie the dress across all the bags in the overhead. It actually worked out REALLY well and the dress was fine. Mind you, mine was all lace (no silk to wrinkle), but I think it worked out perfectly.

My good friend is getting married in Cuba in a few months and she's going to do the same thing; show up at the check-in with her dress in-hand and tell them she's taking it onboard as carry-on.

They're usually pretty accomodating for brides!! :)

As for the groom's suit: We packed my husband's pants/shirt tie. There was an iron at the resort, but we just made sure to take everything out of the suitcase right away and hang it all up.

Good luck!

We flew Air Transat to Cuba and the wedding dress doesn't count as your carry-on. Check and see if you're flying with an Air Transat plane or Canjet (they use both). My travel agent told me to call the airline a month before we leave and just have them put on my file that I'm carrying a wedding dress along.

We had no problems - if you book through a travel agent they will let Air Transat know that you're the bride and groom so you get extra perks like we did - extra baggage allowance, premium seating and free alcoholic drink!

The flight attendants were great with my dress and folded it in the overhead bin. I also put my husband's suit in my garment bag so it was all in one place.

I'm also flying Jetblue for my wedding and just purchased this 66" gown length destination bag by Wally Bags.

http://www.amazon.com/Wally-Bags-Length-Destination-Black/dp/B002B0CR0S/ref=pd_ys_iyr_img

It is advertised as a carry-on that it will fit both wedding gown and tux along with other garments.

Jetblue's webpage regarding wedding attire says "JetBlue does not make special allowances for the transport of wedding attire. Whether it is packed in check-in baggage or a carry-on, wedding or bride's maid dresses, suits or tuxedos, would still have to meet the baggage requirements to/from specific destinations. There are no closets for hanging clothing items or garment bags on the aircraft."  Jetblue Je

To fit in the overhead bin, your item must not exceed:

  • for our Airbus A320: 26 inches (66 centimeters) length x 18 inches (45.72 centimeters) width x 12 inches (30.48 centimeters) height
  •  for our EMBRAER 190: 24 inches (60.96 centimeters) length x 16 inches (40.64 centimeters) width x 10 inches (25.4 centimeters) height
