How to take my wedding dress on the airplane

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I have no idea if anyone has had any experience on this yet, but i am flying through JetBlue and apparently there aren't any "closets" so I may have to put my dress in the overhead. I can't imagine having my dress rolled up and going in the overhead without any other luggage's squishing it... I definitely DO NOT want to check in or ship my dress, way too risky. Has anyone any suggestions? Or thought of what they are doing? I do not even know how my dress is getting packed by the store, need to ask that too and let them know I'm traveling with it!

Thanks!

Ska

I believe my flight does have closets, but I'm being prepared for if they say no they can't hang it there.  I just purchased a cloth garment bag and if I have to put it in the overhead bin, I'll just wait until everyone has already put their luggage up and lay it on top of my things or in an empty overhead bin.

People are always willing to bend over backwards for brides!!  I would ask the flight attendants if they have a personal closet or overhead bin.  If not, make it known that you're getting married and I've read that another bride got her own overhead bin because people were willing to help and make room for "the dress"!!!!  Good luck!

Wow that was really nice of people. Quite shocking as usually people are mean! Nice to know there are some nice people still out there. I like the idea of waiting and putting it on top. Good tip, thanks!

Good luck, I am sure it will be fine!

I flew Sunwing a couple of weeks ago and the flight attendants both on the way down and on the way back were REALLY good. They had reserved an overhead bin just for my dress. :)  any time someone would open it, she'd be right there closing it again not allowing anyone to put anything on top. :)

I agree with talking to flight attendants!!

I chose to play "dumb" and brought my dress in a garment bag (even though another bride on the flight was told to pack hers!!!! She was pissed when she saw me with my dress.) I told the check-in that I wanted to bring it as carry-on and they let me.

I flew Air Transat and there were no closest, BUT what we did was lie the dress across all the bags in the overhead. It actually worked out REALLY well and the dress was fine. Mind you, mine was all lace (no silk to wrinkle), but I think it worked out perfectly.

My good friend is getting married in Cuba in a few months and she's going to do the same thing; show up at the check-in with her dress in-hand and tell them she's taking it onboard as carry-on.

They're usually pretty accomodating for brides!! :)

As for the groom's suit: We packed my husband's pants/shirt tie. There was an iron at the resort, but we just made sure to take everything out of the suitcase right away and hang it all up.

Good luck!

Thank you all for the great suggestions! I will totally bring it on as carry on and hope for the best! Jet BLue flight attendants are usually very nice, so I'm hoping they will also be very nice about this as well. Thanks again for your suggestions! =)
