Well Bre knows more than me so hopefully she will chime in, but from my experience I would say it's as close as it gets. It's crowded and condensed. It's still pretty but it gets prettier IMO the further away you get.

The last time we were there we stayed right off Kuhio (street) 1/2 block from the ocean where there are people on the street all night. You can walk down the street and buy women or drugs. (BTW the hookers in Hawaii are pretty hot and dress well, not the skanky types we have here in Hollywood...lol)

Anyway, it's still really pretty and if you like nightlife, clubs, etc. that's where it's at. But the further you get from Waikiki it's less like that. Maybe it's still there but it's not in your face. Waikiki is still probaly nicer than where a lot of us live, but if you want pretty and tranquil I'd go further out.

Waikiki is the Times Square of Hawaii. The vibe and atmosphere are very uncharacteristic of the Hawaiian islands IMHO. I loved Honolulu, but Waikiki is like a different planet. I always urge people to avoid it if they are looking for a genuine experience. Plus, the beach is not good. The sand is trucked in from elsewhere!
