I actually used to work for directv before becoming a stay at home mom and wedding planner. FI is actually trainer for DirecTV customer service and techs. And we have everything for FREE!

They actually no longer have a contract w/ TIVO, so they sell DIRECTV's DVR, which has more hard drive, can do everything TIVO does, and doesn't have the annoying clicking sound! DirecTV only has a contract w/ TIVO to give their service to customers who still have the TIVOs.

Also, sorry, but I STRONGLY suggest you don't bundle your DirecTV w/ AT&T or Verizon! If you do all of your billing is done through AT&T and Verizon. Especially when you first start AT&T and Verizon have been known to double bill you for a few months, and once you're bundled DirecTV can't do anything about it! If DirecTV makes a mistake such as PPV or extra charges you weren't supposed to be charged, they can credit it back to you (it will credit towards your ENTIRE phone bill), and any changes will usually take about 2 months to post to your bundled bill.

And if you miss a payment or 2 from AT&T and Verizon they can shut off your DirecTV and DirecTV can't turn it back on until AT&T or Verizon call and verify!

Best bet, is what Maura said, get Vonage! Although DirecTV says that you HAVE to have a phone line connected, you don't! The phone line calls back to DirecTV letting them know what you've ordered, PPV or sports subscriptions. It will only hold so many, so if you don't have a phone line eventually you won't be able to order PPV through your remote, you'll have to do it online or call in.

I however LOVE it! As mentioned above, I COULD NOT TAKE the outages with DTV. A little bit of rain or a gust of wind & no satelite service. With Cablevision, we don't have to worry about that so I'd take Cablevision anyday over DTV. As soon as Fios is availalbe, we'll be making the switch!

Also, Cablevision offered the current package/special which is cable, internet & phone for $99 but we didn't get that.

Rain and wind should never cause you to lose service, unless its a tornado or hurricane! It sounds like either your dish wasn't tightened enough into place, or was off a slight on its pointing. Think about it, if your dish was off by 1" by the time you reach the satelites in space, you're off by 3 miles!

If you're going for cheap, DirecTV has NEVER claimed to be the cheapest, and never will be. Although it really is the best deal for HD.

You're price is really going to depend on the services you are wanting. DVR, HD, sports and what channels you want.

Let me know what you want and I can let you know what you'll get w/ them.

Jacilynda, you're a sweetheart for posting all that info! I'm looking to get away from Comcasts b.s. with their constant added taxes and price changes, and I don't even have any movie channels with them. I'd have to check what package I have but I'm currently spending close to $140 for Comcasts cable (2 receivers with zero DVR's or anything) and broadband internet. I just want something that's easier, something that's not screwing me over and something that gives me a recording device and better quality!

So I've had them all. I hated Comcast! I just won't even go there. Right now I have Direct Tv and we love it. And I have never had a problem with the satellite. I live on top of a mountain so maybe that helps? Haha. I don't know. But my favorite was At&t Uverse. It's new and it's not a satellite. It comes through your internet? I can't remember exactly. But I LOVED it! It helped we had att phones so everything went together. You don't have to have a phone line b/c it comes through the internet. But b/c its new it's not offered everywhere but most big cities usually do. I wish we could have it again! But att isn't offered here. But saying that we love our directv. We have the DVR not tivo and I love it!

Hello Calia,

I was just curious, what are the differences between ATT U-verse and DirecTV? I you had your choice, which would you select if both providers were in your area?

Read this:

DirecTV and AT&T U-Verse Comparison | Satellite TV

It goes through what each offers, prices, and channels. We have att&t in our area and before FI worked for DirecTV we looked into Uverse and this article if very factually correct. We now have DirecTV as I put before, cause we get it for free.

Really a television service depends on what it is you're looking for. Like, what channels, movies, hd, dvr, if you can bundle, cost, etc.

Uverse is actually more expensive than Directv unless you get the biggest package, theirs is a little bit less than DirecTV.

Personally, of course I'm biased but you won't get the same quality and more for less. DirecTV definitely doesn't claim to be the cheapest, but to give the best quality. They strive for quality, and not cost.
