What kind of milk do you drink?

I do not like milk but I LOVE cereal. Go figure. I only buy organic fat free milk but it is mainly because the organic lasts so much longer than regular milk. I used to buy regular fat free milk but I was always so worried about it spoiling so I usually threw it out days before the expiration date because I am funny like that. I now have no problems with the organic milk! I still won't drink any milk straight though.

I use vanilla flavored soy milk for my coffee & any cereal I eat. I've been using soy milk for like 10 years. However, I am also a cheese freak! Isn't that weird?
Wow, moms really went the extra mile!! LOL Cow milk makes me phlegmy too, even ice cream does it, not cool sad.gif
And yep, gotta keep the cheese even though it makes no logical sense...lol

Totally! My little cousins are the same way. Their bodies are mature beyond their years and it's scary when a 12 year old stops traffic, you know? They grew up eating cereal and cows milk every day...coincidence?

Oh yeah, natural/organic food is costly. It's so unfair that you can get a double cheeseburger for 99cents and a healthy sandwich or salad will cost you $5+. It's no wonder poorer people tend to have worse health, you know?

I quit drinking cow's milk this year, and it has changed my life. I recently starting using Almond milk for my cereal. It is sweet, but very good. It's healthy for you too. I buy it at whole foods.
I just bought almond milk as part of my taste test but I haven't tried it yet.

I too have come across articles about the dangers of soy. Some people list it right up there with cow's milk, white sugar, white flour, and honey as far as foods that cause illness and various diseases. I've been off honey for a few years now too. I've never enjoyed the taste/digestion of soy anything so I think I'll let my body do the talking and stay away from soy.

This is a very interesting thread.

Growing up, we only had good 'ole regular whole milk. I never liked milk.

As a young adult (20ish) I was somplace where they had skim milk and tried it. I don't think it's too bad. That is what I have always used for my cooking and such. I am still not much of a milk drinker. I too think it makes me phlemy.

The only time that I have ever really wanted milk is when I was pregnant. I CRAVED it. I would drink 2 32oz cups (more like guzzle them!) at work - 2 right in a row. And we only had whole milk there. Just the thought of drinking any whole milk totally grosses me out. I have no idea how I was able to do that. But, I craved milk a LOT when I was with child.

My daughter drinks skim milk now. (pediatrician recommended) However, after reading all of this, I am thinking of trying something different.

I would love if you all (with the research) would help me understand if she should get soy or rice milk. And - how do I make sure she is getting enough calcium?

And - on the juice in cereal - my mom does that when she runs out of milk. She did it once for my daughter (out of necessity - no milk) and now my daughter always wants OJ in her cheerios! Sounds gross to me though!

Thanks!

Hmmm... if anyone can find an article about soy being bad when preggo, I'd really appreciate if it you could post/PM it to me. Since I'm a veg-head, a VERY large part of my diet is soy. My Drs have assured me that my diet choices had nothing to do with it, but hey my Drs sucked!!!

Gretchen I'm still trying to sort out the rice vs. soy thing too....I'm leaning away from soy though since I've never liked it, and I haven't read anything bad about rice milk yet but the soy bashing is out there..lol

Heidi -

I haven't evaluated these sources thoroughly enough, but they seem to be in line with what I've read in health books:

The Truth about Soy and the Soy Industry Scientists versus the soy industry

Studies About Effects of Soy on Human Health

Welcome to Soy Online Service

Beware of the toxicity of soy products

Reading through again I caught this. That is too funny! Was the goat like a pet? Did you live in the country/city? But, wow!, that is a dedicated mom!

Claire I do understand what you are saying. There is a lot of information out there. Sometimes it comes out that something is wrong with the latest food because of science/research/evidence, not just because of a financial motive. Like with the soy thing, I don't think a new gimmick is being pushed so much as people who research for a living are saying "look what I found out" and "we're putting it out there so you can't say we didn't tell you".

After all, there was a day when cigarettes had no warnings, people used to paint their kid's bedrooms with led paint, etc. Someone who researched for a living found out there were risks and that's how we know. People are free to smoke in led rooms if they want, but some people may decide the risk isn't for them. I guess you go with science if it makes sense to you, or you go with what your family raised you to do because in 1925 grandma did it, and so on.

I agree with the common sense factor, which is why I am against drinking cow's milk whether it is skim or full fat. My family drinks it and more power to them, but common sense (to me) says I'm not a baby cow so why would I drink like one? But sometimes there is little in common about our senses, you know? To each their own :)
