Great thread! Growing up, I was allergic to cow's milk. So get this - my mom bought a goat & milked it! So I guess I grew up w/goats milk. When I got old enough to make my own decision, I chose not to drink milk at all. To this day cow's milk still makes me phlegmy. Also, the stark whiteness of it freaks me out.

I use vanilla flavored soy milk for my coffee & any cereal I eat. I've been using soy milk for like 10 years. However, I am also a cheese freak! Isn't that weird?

LOL Christa!

I never drink milk straight - yuck! But when I do use it for cooking and such I use Horizon's Organic 2% Cow's Milk.

My parents used to make me drink milk as a kid but as I grew up my Dad became a health nazi, always up to date on the latest nutrition info. In HS he told me the story about how we are the only mammal that drinks another mammal's milk. When I would tell other ppl this they would argue that cats do too. BUT, we give it to them!!!

The hormones in milk today are horrible. My neice matured way early and had boobs by the age of 9 and the doctors said it was due to the hormones in milk. She's 13 now and looks like she's 17. It's really getting crazy.

I have actually heard some bad things about soy lately, which surprised me. I'll have to dig up that info... I know my BFF was really bummed when she found that out cause she's lactose intolerant and drinks soy milk every day.

I grew up on 2% then went to 1% now I use soy milk in my coffee and fat free milk on its own. Fat free milk took awhile to get used to.

I stopped drinking a glass of milk regularly but am trying to get back in it. I heard that it helps with losing weight?

Soy milk on its own is a little too sweet for me. Is the rice milk really sweet?

It doesn't help that I read a book that spoke of the evils of drinking milk from cows, but I refuse to give up cheese of any kind and I eat things made with it. I just don't enjoy it with cereal anymore.

Soy milk has never really done it for me, but I've started getting into rice milk. It kind of tastes like horchata so I like it. I've not really looked into the research on rice vs. soy but I think I will.

What are your preferences and why?
I read the same book. I try and buy soy milk or organic milk for the most part but sometimes my budget calls for a gallon of skim milk. Trying to eat everything natural or organic can get really expensive. I'm like you though I'm not willing to give up my cheese EVER!

I grew up with cow's milk. My family would drink 2 gallons a day. I also had stomach problems growing up. Turns out...dairy did not sit too well with me. I quit drinking cow's milk this year, and it has changed my life. I recently starting using Almond milk for my cereal. It is sweet, but very good. It's healthy for you too. I buy it at whole foods.

Growing up we were taught all that stuff about cow's milk being bad and unnecessary etc. We still used it for stuff...like cooking etc. And sometimes for cereal, but typically my mom didn't let us have cold cereal 'cause she thought it was all too sugary and not nutritional enough...so it was a rare treat. And half the time she'd try to get us to put something else in it...like juice. Gross. She had read that in a book somewhere and thought it was a great idea...juice instead of milk in your cereal. No thanks. I gave it a try...and it really was soooooo gross! :-) Anyway, it just wasn't used much when I was a kid.

But I LOVE milk. And Choclate milk in particular is a vice of mine. LIke I would have to really sit and think about it if someone said I had to give up either choc. milk or alcohol...I'd need like a day to figure it out! lol! It's seriously that bad. I only buy organic milk (1%) 'cause I really hate all the hormones and everything they put in the cows. I also buy organic butter...that being said, I usually just buy regular cheese since it's more available and a little less expensive... good cheese can get pricey sometimes! lol!

I have heard that too many soy products are bad for you. I can't remember all the statistics off hand...but I've come across that in several of the articles I've read regarding what to eat/avoid while pregnant and while TTC. So I do try to limit some of that stuff and only eat my fave soy-based stuff...edemame etc. I do however like soy milk in some of my hot beverages...like certain coffees and chai tea. And the 8th Continent Choc Soy milk is SOooooo good, IMO. I do prefer rice milk for cereal...it's lighter to me...sometimes the soy milk is kinda heavy tasting to me.

All that being said, I am happy with my 1% organic milk and cereal in the morning...I don't see that changing. :-)
