What Makes a Honeymoon Registry Tacky, and a Regular Registry Not?

I personally wouldn't do a honeymoon registry especially if I were having a destination wedding, but thats just me. But I think the reason some people may think its "tacky" is because a "regular" registry is to help you get items you might need for your household which are essential ( I know now a days many people already have everything or almost everything they need), but still it can help get you the other items to complete your household. Whereas people might see a honeymoon registry as something not essential or really necessary or as an extravagance. I personally like to buy gifts and would rather wrap something up and give it to them then give money or pay towards a honeymoon.

But obviously everyone is different and I think it would depend on how your friends and family might see it. If you know they will think its tacky then why not just mention that cash would be preferable and then use the money you receive from the wedding towards your honeymoon and that way no one has to even know what you used your money for! Or you could set up both a honeymoon registry for those who wouldn't mind putting some money towards it and a "regular" registry for those you think would prefer to purchase a gift.

I guess asking for money is always considered "tacky" but my FI and I will not be having a regular registry. We've been together for 10 years, lived together for 7, and by the time we get married we will have lived together for 9 years. I will probably do a honeymoon/weddingmoon registry/ new house registry. All we really need is help buying a house, as we are currently renting. I know people think it's tacky, but I don't want to register for a bunch of "stuff" I know I will never, ever use.

Makes sense and I mean people usually want to give you something so I guess why not put it towards something useful. I think the new house one is a great idea!

I think it is your guests perception if it is tacky or not. We had a tradition registry and Honeymoon Registry.  Sadly only one person got us something off our honeymoon registry.  We live in a one bedroom Condo and do not have room for any more stuff. Now that our wedding is over I "hate" my condo because it is overflowing with stuff and we still need a couple of more years to save for the house.

I agree- some people want to buy an actual gift and some people don't. I actually don't even want to do a registry at all but my Mom pointed out there will be people who want to come but can't (for various reasons), and to at least give people some options to give us something. Seeing as we are in the same position as you, and our apartment is already overflowing with stuff (and I have a habit/tendency/complete lack of any ability to keep anything nice without breaking it), I don't need a bunch of fancy dishes/ kitchen stuff that I know I won't use at all/ break because I can't seem to help myself. All it will do it sit in our storage room until we move, and then sit in the basement haha.

I would gladly set up a registry for a honeymoon/house. Because let's face it, life is far too expensive and houses are not cheap at all.

I think that the different perception of these types of registries are generational.  The older generation has been negative towards it while the younger generation has welcomed it. I've had lots of friends who did a honeymoon registry or when asked said they'd like money for their honeymoon, and we complied. I'd rather give them something practical so they can have extra memories on their honeymoon than a bowl or linens.
