Shoe question for people wearing their wedding dress during their ceremony on the sand and later or again at a reception...

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm in the process of getting my dress altered and I'm not sure what to do about shoes. I am planning to have a ceremony either on the beach or a pier and was planning to either go barefoot or wear a flat sandal. However, I was also thinking about wearing my dress again at a possible AHR. I would prefer to wear heels but I know I can't do that on the sand. So I was just wondering what other people are doing? Are you just going barefoot and then will wear flats at the reception? Are you wearing a flip flop with some height on the beach and changing into heels later?

Thanks,

Jaime

Thanks for the response. So are you both getting your dresses hemmed for the higher wedges or shorter for the flip flops? Any pictures of your shoes around? I'm having trouble finding shoes and I need some ideas.

Thanks

Jaime

I decided to hem my dress to flats, and still wear wedges for the ceremony. I will sink in the sand with the wedges anyway, and having it a touch shorter will keep the hem out of the sand (mostly). and I'll be comfortable in flats or flip flops later in the night.

When I walked with the hem pinned wearing the wedges, you really couldn't tell it was hemmed higher or "wrong". I've been to weddings where the poor bride is holding up her dress at the end of the night because she kicked off the heels, and I just don't want to deal with that.

Thanks. That makes a lot of sense. My problem is that I don't have shoes yet but I thought I'd probably wear some sort of flat or flip flops for the ceremony and didn't want the dress totally dragging in the sand. But I would have liked to have the option for a heel in case I wear the dress again for an AHR. I guess I'll see. But thanks so much for your response. That definitely helps.

My January destination wedding bride had an amazing solution to this which I thought was SO cool!

Her seamstress actually sewed in little white buttons on the bottom of the hem.  She did it in such a way that you couldn't really see it from outside the dress.  It was super awesome.

So for the ceremony where she was barefoot, the dress was buttoned up.  Then for pictures we took it down so she could wear adorable heels.  Then she just buttoned it back up for the reception so she could wear flip flops.  And finally, for her AHR she will just unbutton it and wear her heels again!

It was the first time I had seen it and I thought it was so cool!
