What is a near-sighted bride to do?

Recommended Posts

I just read a thread about first look photos, which I think are ADORABLE. I have a lot of medically related vision problems, and contacts are not an option. I almost never wear glasses except when watching TV or driving, so I don't plan on wearing them on my wedding day.

I'm thinking about doing first look photos so that even if I don't necessarily see my hubby to be's expression, it will be captured in pictures. I'm also thinking about asking him to stand with his back to me until I can see HIM so that we can share our first look, a la Will and Kate. What do you guys think about that? Is it weird to have the groom face away until I approach the alter?

I love first look photos. I think they are stunning and so meaningful!  You can definately ask him to stand with his back to you until you can see him and then he can turn around.  My future sister and brother in law did that at their wedding in Mexico, because like you, she didn't want to wear her glasses and can't wear contacts.  She wanted to be able to see him, so she could see his expression!  I don't think its weird at all!

Hi GreekFood

I am a Huge fan of your username!! :)

I think it would be totally acceptable to have your groom stand with his back to you so that your first look can be one where you actually see him! I too have awful eye sight and never really thought about this issue until seeing your post.

We always tell our brides that it is your wedding and your day. Especially when planning a DW, you are allowed to bend the rules and think outside the box. It's your Big Day and it's most important for you and your groom to enjoy every minute rather than following some out dated protocol.

Another alternative idea that we see a lot of photogs use is having a private "first look" before the ceremony. Wedding Days are so excited, but the bride and groom can often get caught up in that excitement and they never really get to share a private or intimate moment until all is said and done and they are both exhausted! You could have a special meeting place assigned for an hour before the ceremony, have your groom wait there back turned and you can walk up to him in private for your "first look". The photographer would be able to get pictures of this event for you to remember. Another benefit of doing this is that you will be able to have a few loving words with your hunny before you commit yourselves to each other for life. Many couples find it very calming to see eachother before the actualy ceremony.

Either way, do what is going to give you pictures that you will cherish for a lifetime and don't worry about etiquette- it's your day!!

Good Luck
