MY DIY hair fasteners, please check them out and give your feedback!

Recommended Posts

Hi Ladies,

So I started with making myself my own hair fastener when I couldn't find one that I loved, not to mention that they were all so expensive. I attached a photo of my wedding dress so you can see how it goes with the dress. I wanted the flower to go with the flowers on my dress. This photo doesn't do my dress justice!

Since my fiance is from Scotland, it is a tradition for the women to wear posh hats or fasteners to weddings. Since bringing hats in luggage was not a good idea, I thought why not try to make fasteners for the bridesmaids. The satin flowers I used match the satin on part of the bm dresses exactly.

Lastly, I made one for my future mother in law. Her dress has quite a bit of turquoise so I went with this color. My fiance is also wearing his kilt that has a nice turquoise/blue. She has quite a personality and short salt and pepper hair so I think the peacock feathers will love great on her hair. My only question/concern is the middle...not sure if it is enough bling? I bought something us to put there and it didn't look right so I used what I had at home. Feeback? Thanks!!!wedding dress.JPGmine2.jpgbridesmaidpeacock.jpg

These are so great!!!! Where did you get your faux feathers?!?!

Here is my feedback

- LOVE your bridal one with the feathers!!! I LOVE feathers.... I may attempt my own as my dress has a flower with feathers and I would like to replicate something for my hair!!!

- LOVE the red one also perfect!!!!

- The colours of the third one are perfect and I am in love with the peacock feathers.... I am not however loving the centre "bling".  I think instead of the metal flowers in the centre of the turqoise flower maybe add gem stone bling or even some blue "beading".  Not sure if you can do this but some seed beads sewn into the centre for the centre of the flower would probably look great and keep it "tonal" and coordinated.

Hoe this helps!!!

Well done!

I think the white & pink ones are awesome! I agree with Tori about the turquoise, love the feather but I would try adding blue beading with the metal, or a little metal star/flower? with blue stone to bring the blue to the center.

I'm going to try to make my own as well! Did you get the petals at the dollar store or cut them yourself?

Also, where did you find the feathers?

Thanks!

I definately LOVE LOVE LOVE the bridal one!!!! I want it for mine lol. im so jealous as I am no where near as crafty as you, and definately can not make one for myself, so I will probably end up buying one (I have yet to find one that I like other than yours lol).  The red one is very nice, I think the feather combination is outstanding on it!  Im going to have to agree with the ladies about the turquoise one, not a fan of the centre of it! its nice, but I think if you changed it up with beading or a nice jewel, that it would be that much better!! amazing work!

They look so sweet! I just tried a poufy hair flower/feather thingy in my hair when we went to check out bridesmaid dresses the other day and I loved it. Are they hard to make? Because I pretty much would have bought that one in the bridal shop if I had the money right then. I didn't even ask how much it was because I didn't have any money with me lol. It was to be a strictly looking-only day.

Ladies,

Thank you for the feedback! I am glad you all seem to agree with me regarding the peacock fastener. It just doesn't look right. I had bought a goldish ":thing"that had a star/flower in the middle but the colors weren't right.

I will have to keep looking! I won't send a photo to FMIL til it is complete.

As for how hard it is, it is super EASY! Celticgirl, even you could do it. I found a DIY tutorial online, here is one of the sites I used.

Where did I get my flowers and feathers? For my fastener and FMIL got the flowers at Michaels. For bridesmaids I found these at Fabricland in Canada, I think any fabric store would have them. They came in a few colours. They didn't look too pretty before...had ugly red beads in the centre. I used pliers to take the flowers apart, took centre of silk flowers out. I positioned feathers first, used barretts/hair clips I bought Michaels that have a flat face where you glue a piece of fabric to it then glue your feathers, then flower and beading etc.

Feathers- The peacock feathers, and nice red ones I got at Michaels in the floral section. I lucked out as they have pick like things and the one I bought had the different red feathers and some peacocky spiky things. I found the peacock feathers after. I did use some regular white feathers I bought in craft section at Michaels. I found a White feather boa at dollarama (Canada) for 1$ and used the smaller feathers for filler here in there.

My fastener, I found the centre metal flowers in the wedding section at Michaels. They are hair spiral pins and I got the 60% off! I used pliers and carefully took off the spiral part and glued it on after. I used a larger hair clip with teeth in it so it really stays in my hair as it is a bit heavier then the other ones.

Thank you! I really enjoy making them. We'll see maybe I will consider taking orders.

I see your wedding is coming soon! Check out the etsy site. There were some really nice ones that were only 50$ -75$ which isn't bad given that most in stores are 150$ and up.

If you don't have flowers on your dress like me, any white flower fastener with a bit of bling and feathers would be nice. On etsy there was one I almost bought, they flower was made entirely out of feathers, and I think it was 60$, it had a bit of bling in the middle, perfect for a destination weddding

Good luck with your last minute things to do!

Celtic girl,

After rereading your post, I was thinking, if you got all the same stuff as me at Michaels, you could make one pretty much the same as mine. Honestly, it tooked 30 mins max and I think with getting things on sale it cost 15$!
