Seasoned Travellers, I need your help!!

My FI and I are getting married in January in Jamaica.  We are flying with Transat Air.  Our TA told us today that if we want to we can pay ($15 dollars per seat per flight) to select our seats.  If we choose not to do this they just assign us whatever seats are left at the airport.

My question to you seasoned travellers with travelling experience, is it worth it to pay the money to pick our seats before hand or will we be able to get two seats side by side if we wait until the airport to choose our seats on the day of departure?

Hi JayKay,

That's sounds really strange to have to pay to get assigned seating together, but I've never flown on Transat Air. I've traveled overseas a lot though and have never had to pay for seats together. January is high season in Jamaica, so the flights may likely be full or close to full. To be safe, I would pay so that you and your fiance and can sit together.

I travel often and only once have my fiance and I not been able to sit together.  If you get to the airport early you won't have a problem.  The one time we couldn't sit together we were leaving from Cancun and our bus was the last to arrive at the airport and we were some of the last people to check in so they didn't have two seats together so they gave us seats across from one another.

Hey Jaykay...kinda wierd you have to pay to switch your flight seat  . We flew continental a few months ago, and our original seats were the last row next to the bathroom, gross...We just went on continental.com entered in our reservation number and we were able to change our seats to whatever was available...I wonder if you can do this if you go on the Transat Air website? Like,  is the TA just charging you to do it, or is the airline acutally charging ? Find out. $30 bucks is $30 bucks!

Air Transat does not do pre determined seating unless you pay, so pretty much if you pay you pick your seats if you don't they assign you whatever is left at the airport.  We did go online and it is Transat charging the fee. Our travel agent told us its a good idea to pay to pick then because January to Jamaica is pretty busy, also we were able to go online today and see all the available seats, and over half the seats on the plane are already choosen, which makes me nervous seeing as its only June!!  I think we will just pay to be on the safe side to ensure we get to sit together, I would be really upset if we didn't get to!

  • 4 weeks later...

We actually paid the extra 20$ to select ALL of our guests seats that are on the same flight with us (which is almost everyone). I think it will get us really pumped up and ready to have a good time. Plus those that dont know each other as well have time for small talk. My friend is staying in a room with my aunt. they have never met so the plane (and ride to the resort) will be a nice way to make it less awkward when they get to the room.

I've traveled a few times where this was an option... and I have never paid for the seats or had any problems... until our last vacation.  I will now pay for seats every single time I go.

You see, we got to the airport, the flight was oversold, and since we didn't RESERVE a seat we were the ones that got bumped off!  I was irate to say the least.  In the end it worked out fine as a few people who DID reserve their seat didn't show up so we were allowed back on the plane, but to have purchased a ticket through the airline directly and then be told we didn't have a seat was beyond stressful. For your wedding, it's not worth it!  Pay the extra!
