ROR Riu Ocho Rios Food Poisoning!

Recommended Posts

We just got back from attending a destination wedding of a very close friend. The food at this resort was the worst food we have ever tasted (think college cafeteria buffets). The only way around it was to make a reservation at one of the nicer restaurants. The food at the buffets were so nasty that people were in line at 8am making dinner reservations for the nicer steakhouse. Just to give you an example of how nasty everything was, after one of the bridesmaids got very very sick from the eggs at breakfast, I opted for cereal the following days. The cereal was stale if you can believe it. The milk wasn't even chilled, and the cream for our coffee curdled. We figured we were finally in luck after nabbing a highly sought after reservation at the Mammee Bay steakhouse on the resort. Boy were we wrong. The meat was so tough and rubbery, it tasted like something I had when visiting my grandmother in her nursing home. I ignored the texture and lack of flavor and stomached what I could. The following day, many of us got very sick and some could not even attend the wedding. When we finally got home, I looked up the resort on many of the reviews sites and the poor quality of the food is frequently the topic in all the reviews. I wish I would have checked it out beforehand because I probably would have not gone on the trip. I feel so bad for our friend because she knew how many of us got sick and I'm sure it interfered with her general mood on her wedding day.

I have heard mixed reviews about the food.

There is another thread here: http://www.bestdestinationwedding.com/forum/thread/71232/riu-ocho-rios-food

I am getting married there in January 2012.

One of my girlfriends was there this past January and said that the food was fine and she is actually a picky eater. She said there was always something for everyone. The only bad thing is that there is limited protein for vegetarians (which I am) so I am going to bring some protein bars.

You have to keep in mind that any buffet isn't going to be the freshest thing going - it's sitting out under heat lamps! Best way to get the best/freshest food would be to go as soon as it opens.

Something else you have to remember is that you can't please everyone. Just relax and enjoy yourself.

that's a good point, you totally CAN'T please everyone.  When traveling anywhere you should always be cautious about food.  On that note I will make sure to pack some goodies in the OOT bag for my vegetarian friends, almost forgot.  Thanks for the reminder :)

I had my wedding there a couple weeks ago and 2 of my guests also got food poisoning.  Can't remember where 1 of my BMs ate that made her sick, but my sister's fiance ate at the Jerk Chicken Hut.  I heard this was the best place to eat on the resort so i told everyone to go. I felt bad b/c I had 4 different ppl tell me the chicken wasn't cooked all the way.  Ironically, I got a hamburger so I didn't have a problem!

Overall, I thought the food was pretty good. There's def some food that is unrecognizable and some that is plain nasty, but there's so much to choose from at the buffets it wasn't a problem.  None of us really liked the Italian place that was open late. They seemed to have the same dishes every day.  Steakhouse was good, but the portions were so small we still ended up going to the buffet afterwards.  Plantation was my abso fav! It's only open during lunch though. Tushima was very good too.

Best thing to do is make reservations for the entire week the 1st day you get there b/c they fill up quick.
