Keep or sell????????????????????

I put a deposit on a dress and it has come in, but there is an issue. I put the money on the dress because of the price. It is not the "IT" dress. My dilemma now is do I go ahead and keep the dress, do I lose my deposit and find the it dress, or buy the dress to sell it to buy the it dress. How difficult will it be for me to sell a size 12 dress?

I think if this were me, it would depend on how much I put down for a deposit.  Do you mind sharing how much you put down for a deposit??  I don't think a size 12 would be too hard to sell?  Do you have a picture of the dress?!?

I don't think the size should be an issue. Since wedding dresses run smaller than street-size, the dress is really only a size 10... and I'm pretty sure that many women are that size. Good luck

I put $380 for the deposit. The picture I have of the dress is not a very good picture.

I think you should be able to sell a brand new unaltered dress...but if you don't mind losing the $380, that might be your best option.  I am honestly a firm believer in really having a dress you love.  I ended up spending double what everyone else I know had spent on theirs, and everyone says i'm crazy...but I love it and wouldn't have it any other way.  Good luck...I think it really depends on your budget and how much the loss will affect you.  One thing to consider is that it is almost guaranteed, no matter what, that you will still lose money on selling it.

Several years before I met my now husband, I was engaged to someone else and we were planning our wedding. I put down a $250 deposit on a sample dress that was discounted down to just over $750 from the original price of nearly $4500. While the dress was in layaway at the bridal salon and I was making monthly payments on it, we broke up and cancelled the wedding.  I had $350 invested and had a similar dilemma in that I didn't know whether to finish paying it off and take possession of the dress to resell or to walk away and lose the money already paid. 

 

I decided to pay the rest of the money thinking that it wouldn't be too hard to sell a beautiful, size 10, never worn dress, worth nearly $4500 for only $750.  Looking back, I wish I had walked away from the deposit.  Even after advertising it on several online sites and auction sites, it ended up taking me nearly 5 years to sell a perfect, spotless, popular style gown and I had to reduce the price to $150.  Not only that, but the gal I eventually sold it to was a huge pain because she didn't do her research about the difference in street sizing and bridal sizing, ignored the dress measurements I had in the ads and had sent her before she purchased, and she just assumed that the size 10 gown would fit her because that was her street clothes size. Although I advertised it as final sale/no returns and for potential buyers to verify their body measurements against the gown measurements before buying to ensure proper fit, she did nothing but complain to me via email for a month about how she bought a dress (a $4500 dress for only $150, mind you) that didn't fit her.

 

After that experience, I would never try to sell a wedding gown again.  They just don't seem to sell very quickly, even when deeply discounted.

Thank you for you opinion. I think I just may walk away from the deposit because I have this feeling that I will have a hard time trying to sell it.

Yikes, that is a lot of money to walk away from but you'll already be spending so much time on the wedding it might be worth it to not have the hassle of finding a buyer for it.  But you deserve one you absolutely love.

Check in your area for local consignment shops.  They have better luck with selling than individuals do.
