Steel drum band music - Jamaican Brides

Recommended Posts

I didn't see a thread about this - if there is one I apologize. I was wondering what kind of music the steel drum bands play? Do they play regular music with a reggae beat or a certain kind? Did you like having them and did your guests seem to enjoy the music?

Your imput is greatly appreciated!

We had a steel drum band for our ceremony. They played a mix of reggae music and non-reggae as the crowd mingled and got seated. And they played "Here Comes the Bride" when I came down the aisle. After the ceremony they played a nice mix again. It was beautiful and made our wedding really special and unique- our guests (a mix of Americans and Jamaican-Americans) absolutely loved it!

We only had the steel drum band for 1 hour which included pre-ceremony, ceremony, and champagne toast/mingling afterwards.

The reception was pretty much just dinner, toasts, and cake cutting, so I made a reggae iPod playlist and rented the speaker/microphone setup from the resort.

I also thought a steel drum band would be nice for the ceremony, but my FMIL hates this idea - she thinks it would be better at the reception. To me it's more like nice background music as opposed to party/dancing music like I want for the beach reception. Am I way off base herehuh.gif

If you go to youtube, you can search for "steel drum band music" (or something similar). You will see that they can play really beautiful music, including a lot classical songs and "traditional" wedding music. It sounds fantastic! I'm not sure how difficult these pieces are, but I'm definitely going to ask my wedding coordinator if the band at my wedding can play some of these songs...

I agree with you. They also would've been nice at dinner, but with our budget, it was perfect to just hire them for an hour!

We absolutely loved the steel drum band. It was perfect to have them playing when everybody was coming in and getting seated, and then again right after the ceremony for our champagne toast. A lot of people were dancing (including us)!
