Hmm, in the article it says when travelig by plane:

There was a time when you could carry the gown with you and hang it in a storage cabin. Today most airlines insist you check your gown with your other luggage so unless your gown is very informal you will need a large box or an extra suitcase to protect it.

 

 

I think this is contradictory to what the other girls have said. I thought most airlines let you take the gown on the plane with carry on.

I will say from experience that this is partially true.

I flew CanJet from Montreal to Cuba and I chose to just show up with my dress in a bag and check it as carry-on. They were a little shocked at the check-in counter, but I pretty much refused to budge on the matter.

So, they let me do it, stating I had to work out the logistics of the dress once I was on the plane. So, while we were waiting our 4 hour delay (yes, that's right 4 HOURS) a random girl walked up to me and was like: "Is that your wedding dress?" And I told her it was and she got a bit irked as she was ALSO getting married but she called ahead to the airline before showing up at the airport and they told her she wasn't allowed to have it as carry-on so she had to stuff her dress in a suitcase and check it!! I tried not to look smug, and I really did feel bad for her because the dress must have been SO wrinkled when she took it out of the suitcase!

In my opinion: Show up with your dress in a dress bag as carry-on. They'll find room for it. Even though we were on a small plane (with no room to hang the dress) the flight attendants were REALLY sweet and made sure the dress was laying on top of the luggage stored in the overhead compartment (the compartment was the perfect length!) and they routinely checked on it after turbulence and after landing.
