Music for adult crowd?

OK so we have about 2 months till the wedding. It looks like we are having a smaller group and that they are mostly over 40. We have a handful of 25-35 yr olds attending. Here is my question, what type of music should we play? I dont think that a lot of people will be dancing (unless extremely intoxicated) so should we keep it melow? Also should we pay($500) for a sound system and someone to run it for only a group of 25? I am so stressed out about having everyone just sitting around staring at each other! Help me please.....

Wow, I feel soooo old now! How much over 40? Like 40-50? Or like 55 +?

If it's 40-50 (I'm 39, FI is 40) we're just like regular people...lol...you can play pretty much anything...maybe classic rock like Steve Miller Band...if it's over 55 that's another story....

Depends what type of music you like!

We're bringing an iPod docking station (instead of paying for the stereo set-up) since we're only 15 people. We're compiling a mix of mellow but cool music (jazz, world, French, etc..), including some Michael Bublé, Pink Martini (my favourite band ever, they're very diverse!), Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Ima, etc...

If any of our guests want to dance afterwards, we're planning on heading to the disco at the resort :-)

My girlfriends and I are all in our late 40's and we love to dance! We'll dance to the current stuff (Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce etc), but we'll dance to just about anything. There are some in our group that we always have to do the Timewarp for, and others that prefer disco, but our parties are nothing if we can't dance

Time Life has a CD set called the Romance series. Nat King Cole and classic love songs. Everyone love it. If you don't want to pay for a DJ maybe you can make sure they have a sound system and build a great Ipod play list. Another idea for getting the energy up is to have some "dance plants", a couple who gets out there and dances to get the energy up. My in-laws set the tone by breakdancing to the first song (yes they are 60 +). We also hired salsa instructors to come in 2 hours after the beginning of the cocktail session just to keep the energy going.
