Crime in Cabo

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know of a website where I can get some info on the crime rate in Cabo?

FI's ex-wife is now using killings in Cancun and Tijuana as reasons why we should not take FI's kids down to the wedding with us. I knew this would happen, she has been using the Swine Flu as her "concern" but when I emailed her today to let her know the Travel Advisory had been lifted, she said that she is not concerned about the flu anymore, but about the "brutal killings" that happen all over Mexico.

I have already sent her this article:

http://www.hautter.com/assets/files/...cn_article.pdf

but I feel like I need a stronger case than an article saying how safe it is which was written for a magazine that promotes Cabo.

I know she is being cautious for her kids, however its one thing after another....

Any help or suggestions on this would be appreciated.

Deanna

I cannot stress enough to all the future brides that Cabo is an oasis and the media exaggerates and doesn't really tell you the whole story, just what makes them sell: isolated violence, painted as "pandemic" violence all over the country. I hope the article helps.

Deanna - I feel your pain. One of my bridesmaid's husbands is doing the same thing as a reason for why he won't go to our wedding next week. He first jumped on swine flu fears and when that dissipated claimed he was really concerned about violence targeting american tourists, though I can't find anything relating to Cabo on this topic that justifies his fears. I called the US Consulate in Cabo for information on violence against tourists and they said the last reported violence was a few months ago when two La Paz residents were kidnapped and held for ransom and released the next day - but this did not involve tourists. The consulate has seen an increase in passport thefts so they suggested putting passports in hotel's main safe (something pretty much every foreign country advises). Otherwise be smart, don't flash money around and use all the precautions you'd use when you travel anywhere. Perhaps you can call the consulate and get an updated report to show FI's ex you checked things out. Unfortunately, our research did not sway my guest and I think people looking for an excuse will find one - facts will not help. I hope FI's ex responds better. Good luck!

deanna,

i go to cabo once or twice a year. i have been there twice while pregnant and have taken my son down twice as well. we have also travelled with a ton of family (babies to elderly) and celebrities and have never had an issue.

also, if it was so dangerous, why is it the weekend escape for all the stars? they are down there all the time.

Tammy - I have made those exact same arguments, thank you! Though I never made the celebrity argument because I figured he would claim they have private bodyguards so that wouldn't help my case : ).

Again, I think it comes down to people looking for an excuse, not the facts. My 45 guests can't wait to go to Cabo next week, the 46th guest. . . I have no words left for him. I just hope Deanna has better success than I did because obviously her FI's kids coming is far more important.

Thanks Tammy - you don't have to sell me...FI and I go down 2-3 times a year too. I am not worried at all.

FI's ex is just a drama queen, so I need something concrete to send her. When she was trying to argue about the swine flu I sent her a link that showed a dot on the map of the US and Mexico where every case of the swine flu had been confirmed and when ALL of Baja was blank and there were more cases in our own backyard, she finally shut up.

I will call the consulate tomorrow to see what kind of info I can get.
