Deadly swine flu virus in Mexico

Recommended Posts

Hi Ladies,

My fiancee just got a call from his friend who works for the Associated Press, asking to interview us for a story about how DWs are being affected by the Swine Flu. I'm on the fence about this one - we're still planning to continue with our May 30th wedding in Cancun, for about 80 people. Is there going to be a lot of backlash that we're irresponsible for doing this? I hope not. I think a lot of people out there (especially my guests) know that the media is blowing this way out of proportion...

My plans are back to being up in the air. As I wrote yesterday, I had talked to my TA on Monday night and decided to change locations and she said she would get to work on it and have choices for a new destination for me today. Well instead, she calls me and says that the travel company is still operating with the May 6th date for penalty fee relocations. I offered, a third time, to provide a note from my son's peditrician stating that he should not travel to Mexico due to his weak immune system and she thinks even that won't help, so her answer....wait a couple days to see if they extend the May 6th date!!! wtf.gifI don't want to wait. Even if we moved today that leaves me two weeks to replan everything, and now she wants me to wait. She is currently checking to see what the penalty will be. Stupid me didn't buy insurance when I made my final payment 2-3 weeks ago because I couldn't foresee anything that would keep me from my own wedding, boy was I wrong!

Just FYI - I went to my doctor yesterday cause I was getting a prescription for motion sickness patch for the wedding in case we go out on a boat. Also asked if I could get prescription for Tamiflu and she said sure. It is just a regular anti-viral that you would take for the regular flu, although I wouldn't take it unless I got really sick. But - I have gotten sick bunches of times and never thought I was going to die... so as long as fever stays under 102.. whatever, it is the flu, will pass..

So, hoping to keep forward as planned. Going to send the guests an email today - an adaptation from the ones posted on the forum (thanks ladies!). As long as the military will allow my fiance (coast guard) to travel, we are going to have our wedding June 5 (we fly out May 29). As of now, we can't change our flights to Dom Rep without change fees, although if this continues airlines might keep extending the dates. Who knows.. Just trying to stay positive and push along with my wedding projects.. Have my dress fitting today...wish I could be more excited. If the military says he can't go to Mexico.. will have to either swich locations or postpone.. neither of which I really want to do.

And, only 4 cancellations so far: SIL & 2month nephew, and another couple (although he is coast guard too and I think he is getting resistance from his work on getting travel clearance). So, that is fine, will still be super fun!

Does anyone else feel like this has been the longest week ever! Monday seems like forever ago.. I remember last weekend feeling so excited that our wedding was coming up in a month and getting stressed about finishing up all my DIY projects.. Now.. trying to stay positive.. but under it all just really sad and dissapointed. Happy to hear from you brides who were able to change locations or move forward with your weddings. I wish Key West had an all-inclusive, as I really love the relaxed vibe at them. Although, love love love Key West, and Duval street is a blast! :)

Just be safe and follow all precautions and you'll be just fine. And on the positive side it will probably mean the beaches are a lot less crowded. I'm on these Isla Mujeres message boards and got these messages from people down there today: Good luck, just remember to relax - and don't turn on the tv down there! If you get a chance please send us a message to let us know how it is.

I am down here now and as I lay on my beach chair in the breeze with a cool cervesa in hand, it seems like an oasis from the US fear machine! Im glad Im here and not there. We are fine!!!

things are still fine. Have been here since last Friday, and unfortunately we have to make our way back to the States in a few days. Had lunch at Bally Hoo and by the time we left every table was full..busy as normal on Medina and at least in my opinion the hard work on Hidalgo is coming along nicely. We have seen very few masks. We are swimming, eating, shopping and relaxing...just paying attention and washing our hands
I am gettin married there next May. Wish I was there now. I can't wait to see your pics.popcorn.gif
Have fun and be careful.

Love the note from your dad!

Also, we received a note from our coordinator in Cancun, at the Casa Magna Marriott, saying that they have no Swine Flu issues there, either. Again...this is all being blown so out of proportion by the media...

Total agree Paula! All blown way out of proportion. In the end its just the flu, plain old flu. And while everyone is freaking out canceling their weddings ( some of which aren't even until July!) we will be in MEXICO - Margaritas in hand! All of are guest are on board and ready to get the hell out of the US, away from any TV or Radio and just have FUN!

BTW - LOVE the Casa Magna Marriot - have stayed their twice - its BEAUTIFUL!

For those who have decided to go on with their plans in Mexico ~ I'm equally glad that you are sticking with your plans and basically giving the swine flu a big "F.U." cheesy.gif
To MarieSam and all the BDW brides who have booked photo and/or video with us (PlayaWeddings). We're going to do backflips to make sure you get the best coverage for your wedding day. We're going to put extra effort into all of our weddings. We'll send extra copies of the DVDs so you have a great wedding video to give to anyone who decides not to come.

I think I can speak for all the vendors in the Riviera Maya. You can expect extra special attention and "above-and-beyond" service from all of us down in the Riviera Maya. I can promise it for all our PlayaWedding clients.

let me rephrase that - some people are canceling weddings who do not have to and their weddings arent even until two and three months away - others have to ( military, canada, etc) which they have no choice in the matter and I feel so bad for all of you girls being forced to. But just know it will be great no matter where you end up :)
