Are you religious?

I consider myself religious, but I don't go to church as often as I would like so that is what I selected. I was brought up Methodist and attended church regularly as a child, but now I don't go as often as an adult.

I was raised Roman Catholic, baptized, confirmed and all of that but I do not attend mass regularly (only on occasion when I'm visiting my mom because I know it makes her happy). I did go to Catholic school from kindergarten through to the 9th grade and then switched to the public school system for grades 10 - 12. I have my own beliefs and I do disagree (as Carly stated) with many things that the church preaches such as not using birth control and not "condoning" people's sexual orientations (whatever they may be). I do sometimes find it a little close-minded for my tastes but I still believe in a higher power whatever that may be. I believe more in the "church of good karma" as in if you do good then good will come to you and if you do bad then bad things will happen. I feel if you live your life following basic principles such as respect, honesty, etc then that is just fine.

About actually going to church, it's not so much that I mind the sermons or anything but I feel like it loses a lot of meaning for me going to the Roman Catholic church where all we do is sit, stand and repeat after the priest. It feels a little robotic to me...like we're saying these words but does anyone actually stop to think about what they mean? Anyway, I picked the option of "more spiritual than religious". :)

Off topic but w00t I totally just dinged "senior member" yay me! smile29.gif
I'm with you on this one. I was also raised Catholic, but don't necessarily buy into it. My mom went to private school when she was younger and put me in private kindergarten. I hated it! The nuns were so mean and I was only 5! I begged my mom for months to send me to the other school and after a couple months she put me in public, but the tradeoff was CCD for 8 years. Once a week was much more tollerable than everyday so I fulfilled my end of the bargain. I don't go to church unless it is for a wedding or funeral so I guess you could say I'm a bad Catholic.

I think you can interact with your God (whichever religion you are) in however you see fit, as long as you life your life the right way. Basically, as long as you are a good person.

I believe more in the ideas behind the religion, and I don't take anything literally. Most of the stories are told to make a point, and the point is the lesson, not necessarily the story. At least that's what I believe. However, I have some friends that are very gung-ho with their religions and take each story as a literal historical fact and I completely respect that.
I agree. I find myself sort of spiritual. I have a hard time with the rules and beliefs of most religions. I have a hard time in believeing something I can't see. I was raised in a baptist church and as an adult I do struggle with the decisions I make for my children when it comes to religion. I don't want to force anything on them but its also their right to learn everything I can teach them, so although I do not bring them to church I struggle with whether I should. They are learning about things along the way though and ultimately it will be their choice in the end. I just hope I don't screw them up!

I want your take on something since it has to do with our current topic. How would you feel if a coworker that you don't know very well gave you a detailed letter requesting monetary donations to go on an expensive overseas trip to promote their religion?

i'd say no. when i donate money, it goes to science-related-find-a-cure kinda places. american heart association, american cancer society, susan g. komen, etc. i also believe in what i believe in and wouldn't push my beliefs on others, nor would i support someone else pushing their beliefs on others.

uummm... NO lol
but seriously i only give $ to causes I care about and support - if you support the mission of her religion then i would donate but if it's something you are opposed to just ignore it.

like she wants to go overseas and evangelize??

ick sorry to offend but i hate that shit. i repect everyone's right to choose their own faith and practice it but i do NOT respect shoving it down someone else's throat and the judement that comes along with not choosing it - you are not worthy lol

Yeah, to go overseas and push her beliefs. I'm so annoyed with it but wondered if I was overreacting. At first I was thinking how inappropriate to do this at work. Plus, it puts people that she does have a relationship with in an awkward position. The letter is filled with her strong religious opinions.

I'm really gnostic because I follow a little of everything, but by birth I am Catholic. Like my fellow Catholics here I disagree with the outdated and biased stuff, but it isn't all bad and I participate from time to time. So far every religion I've studied has parts that make sense and parts that are bs. In the end most of them believe in the same basic principles of being good to people, and that is what matters to me.

And ditto on funding someone's missionary trip, heck no! I too have issues with imposing religion on people, as if to say they don't have it right and need outside help. If a church group wanted to go abroad and do good deeds for poor people I would support that, but it's never just that. It's usually more like "here is some food...and the tenants of our religion which you'll need to save your soul". History shows what a terrible idea that is and how much culture is lost along the way. Actually I think it is pretty arrogant.
