and unless i decide to be lazy (and just tie ribbon and a tag to them LOL), i will be doing my own hand-painting! mishka's designs are inspiring!
I have been thinking about ordering these......how do they look in person are they wood or paper? Did you decorate them yet? How did they come out?

haha i just saw this ... um NO i haven't decorated them yet. lazy, lazy, lazy! i am pretty sure that i may just skip it. they are small and made of a light-colored wood. the wood is very smooth. there is a seam horizontally across the middle of the "rattle" part of the maraca. they are not loud when you shake them like plastic maracas.

i think the maracas in the pic on elizabeth medina's website (Elizabeth Medina Photography, Mexico Destination Wedding Photographer, Wedding Photojournalism throughout the Riviera Maya, Yucatan and Mexico) might be the ones from OTC (the person tied their seating cards to them with ribbon, and only painted the rattle end a solid color and left the handle natural--good idea that looks nice if you are pressed for time or not great with painting). you can see the seam i was talking about too, across the middle of the painted part.

i think it depends on what you're looking for. the wood ones are definitely "classier" (haha classy maracas?) but they make barely any sound at all. if you want more of a fun, loud-rattling party thing, then maybe plastic is for you.
