Kidnappings in Mexico /riveria mayan

Recommended Posts

We are getting married in May 2009 and are traveling to cancun with our two babies. We are very worried with all the kidnappings going on down there. Does anyone know if there are alot in the area of tulum/cancun? The main concern is the eco-bus tour that is picking us up from the airport & taking us to Dream Tulum. I am so worried about that. Anyone that has any advice or knows any useful information please share.

Thanks

Pamela

Hi there, this topic has already been discussed extensively as of late -- if you do a search for travel alerts you will find several threads.

Here's the main link to all of them: http://bestdestinationwedding.com/forum/t38173

In a gist, the travel alerts are geared toward border cities -- but like all out-of-country trips just take caution and stay away from areas late at night where there is a large presence of drugs and prostition. Taking any tour bus in the Cancun/RM area should be fine!

Hi Pamela, I am also getting married at DT and have emailed the wc about the problems. She said that the resort and tourist areas are safe. Most of the violence is happening by the border towns. I think you will be fine!

Seriously, who are you hearing this from?

We took our 10 month old baby boy and 6 year old little girl and had other children at our wedding as well and there were absolutely NO problems! I was never even worried...we had our transfer all lined up before we went so we knew exactly which bus to get on after we arrived at the airport, the bus drivers were super nice and friendly and I was never scared or nervous.........I think often times this whole thing gets blown out of proportion, I mean if you think of all the what if's that could happen right here in the US you would drive yourself crazy! Just take the normal precautions and be safe and you should have no problem! Good Luck!!!!

I've lived here for four years and have always felt safe. This area has some of the highest tax revenues in all of Mexico because of the tourism and the money shows with really nice, secure highways linking all of the Riviera Maya. The state is able to pay for police presence and provide facilities for a Federal presence. On your way from the airport to Tulum you will pass through two police checkpoints and a federal checkpoint. They are there for the safety of the tourism business. Transportation to and from the airport is highly regulated. Providers have long term exclusive contracts to go in and out of the airport. You can be assured that only reputable providers are running the buses and vans and that the highway is well watched and protected by the authorities. I have never heard any stories about corrupt police on the highways. There is too much at stake for the economy of this area.
