Day Passes for guests... to pay or not to pay

Recommended Posts

Intially we had said that we would pay for day passes for a couple people who were talking about staying at another resort. Well, then it got out of hand and I had abour 6 people who wanted to stay at another resort!

I apologized and sent out an e-mail that told everyone that due to budget cut backs and the growing number of ppl who wanted to stay elsewhere, that we would not be able to afford to pay for day passes anymore. Now everyone has booked and is staying at the same resort.. I guess they didn't want to pay for the day passes.. but expected us to?? Hrmm?

My brother and my SIL are staying at another resort and that is it, so we told them that we would pay for them since they are the only ones... just not to let anyone know we did that wink.gif

I personally don't think you should have to pay for the day passes. If they have known for awhile where you were staying then they should have factored that into their budget.

My reasoning is that if someone accepts an invitation to a DW, they also accept paying for the costs associated with attending. If they chose not to stay at the wedding resort, and knew that there would be a fee to get on the resort to attend, then accepting the invite also means they accepted that there would be a fee. Hopefully they understood this upfront. Even if they didn't, politely letting them know that because they are not staying on the resort, they would have to purchase a pass for themselves and their guests wouldn't be rude, IMHO.
Everyone knew if they've read their invites and the website. smile43.gif BUt my concern was that the hotel requires 80% of the guests to be stayong at the hotel. Hopefully this won't become a trend. Just this week I've had 3 other guests tell me they are thinking of staying somewhere else.

My Aunt mentioned that if it were a regular wedding I would be paying for each person for the reception... my reply... IT'S NOT A REGULAR WEDDING!!

I agree that you should not feel like you HAVE to pay for day passes for people. If your wedding reception was at a hotel in your hometown you would not pay for peoples rooms, right.....your guests are making the decision to come to your DW and the expense comes with it - so I don't think you should have to feel like you need to pay for the day pass, as long as you let them know if they stay somewhere else they will have to pay the extra fee.

I would ONLY pay for someone's guest pass if:

1. You knowingly selected an Adults Only resort but there are several families with children you have invited (i'd pay for the family's day passes)

2. The guest has communicated to you that due to financial strain they are going to stay at a lesser expensive hotel

Don't give guests the option of making life more difficult for you!! :)

I might in the minority, but I would pay for the guest pass (of the people you actually invited at least) - if you ask me, asking them to pay for a guest pass (or a pass for ceremony/reception only if that's allowed) is like asking them to pay an admission fee for your wedding. It's sort of like asking them to buy their own dinner at your wedding in a way.

If you think about it, they are flying down and paying for a hotel (even if it is a cheaper hotel) so they are spending a lot of money already to come just for your wedding. And money must be a concern, or they wouldn't choose a cheaper hotel - so I think it is only fair you buy their dinner and drinks at your wedding..

As for their friends, that's up to you - I wouldn't pay for them and even though they are their ride, they are doing a favor for them, not for you - I don't think you have to invite extra people just because they are giving your friends a ride.. but I guess it would be generous to allow them to come, but I wouldn't pay extra $ for them if I were you.

I agree with you 100%

We have a bunch of people coming that are planning to stay in a timeshare. Not only the couple that owns the time share, but 4 more guests as well who are friends with the couple who owns the timeshare. We're not paying for their guest passes.... I do have a note on my website indicating the cost for the pass.
