I'm with you! I don't really care for my last name...it's my Dad's last name & I have mixed feelings about him! Plus I like how Mrs. Amanda Merrigan sounds! smile123.gif
Plus Stratton-Merrigan is too long to hyphenate & I don't want to have a different last name as my kids. We could always both change our names to Merristrattogans!!! smile120.gif

I am definitely changing my last name. My maiden surname is RIDICULOUSLY Polish with a silent W at the beginning!. No one can spell it or ever pronounce it. FI's last name is only 4 letters long! Its an easy decision for me. After 32 years of listening to people butcher my last name, I'm happy to let it go :)

I feel it would be letting go of my identity/culture, to change my last name. Also, I am French-Canadian, and in my culture we tend to keep our own last names (although not everyone does!), to the extent that in Québec (Canada's mainly francophone province), you are not allowed to change last names just because you get married. The THIRD reason is that while my last name is French, his is Flemish and no one knows how to pronounce it. The FOURTH reason is that because of my profession, it is impossible at this point to change my name. So my solution is to just add his last name to my "official" name (which is long to start off with, having 2 middle names, my first name and last name!), and keep all my current ID/certificates/etc... That way, when we have kids, we'll all share the same last name and I get to keep mine which will remain the most used one for myself. He's happy with that now, after much discussion, since initially he was disappointed that I would not give up my name althogether.

It's going to be really really hard for me to change my name, but I'm going to do it. I'm very close with my family, and I have 2 brothers who are both married, so everyone has my last name. Leaving that name behind is going to be tough big time for me. But at the end of the day, I don't want to have a different last name than my kids. So I'll do it! I'm hoping it will get less weird as time goes on. Also I know FI would be super pissed (well, sad I guess) if I didn't take his last name. It's important to him. I'm going use my maiden name in one of my children's names (probably as a middle name).

I've also considered getting rid of my middle name as it is now (Elizabeth, which I don't really care for) and putting my maiden name as my new middle name. I know some people that are doing that and I kinda like it! If I don't, my new initials are going to be HEE! How ugly!

I decided that I am going to change my last name too. Just like Heather, it's going to be very hard to do that though. I am, too, very close with my family and I have no brothers to carry on our last name. However, I do take comfort in knowing that I have three boy cousins with our last name so they will pass it on to their children.

Plus, I absolutely adore my last name. My name is Heather Jones. It is very plain, but forever I have always been called "Heather Jones" not Heather, so it's like part of my first name. Or, people call me Jones or Jonesy. Some people I know will keep calling my Heather Jones despite the name change but that's okay. I'm not going to hyphante my last names together, they will just be way too long, plus I have two middle names to begin with, so I don't want 5 names.

My new last name is very Ukrainian, but sounds Mexican in the way that it is pronounced. But whatever, Francis said it was up to me, but I knew that he really wanted me to take his name, and it makes him smile and be happy, so that's the most important thing.

I am looking forward to it, it's like a new chapter.

So at first I thought I might want to keep my name. I am a forward thinking woman and all for equality with men, etc. But for our future children and for the family aspects I like having the same name. For work I think I will use a hyphen and keep my last name, might do that legally too. Not sure yet, how i will do this legally. My concern is my credit and those types of things.

But yep, for the family aspect I will be taking his name. :)
