Re-Engagement?

I wasn't sure if this belonged in the engagement thread or not, but it was more of a random thought for me, so it's here lol Our engagement was kinda weird. We went out shopping for a "promise ring" and I picked out the exact one I wanted, we paid for it and brought it home and wrapped it up, agreeing it would be a Christmas present. So Christmas morning I open it (not really that surprised, I did pick it out and wrap it up lol) and Marc looks at me and says "Let me put it on your finger for you" so he puts it on my ring finger and just says "I really want you to know that I love you, and this ring is my promise of marriage to you" So me, being the sap that I am, tear up and just hug him for what seemed like 20 minutes. So a couple of hours later, I'm thinking back about what he had said, and I said "Wait, is this a promise ring or an engagement ring?" "It's whatever kind of ring you want it to be. We're going to get married eventually." So I say "Well you can't just say, 'Yeah, it's an engagement ring!' What about getting down on one knee?" So he just smirks at me and says "Okay, give me the ring" and gets down on one knee and actually proposes.

It was really sweet, and I absolutely love him, but I hear everyone else's fabulous engagement story and I want a good story to tell our kids and grandkids, because mine seems kinda lame... smile116.gif I get a lot of crap from my relatives because my ring is three pink topaz hearts, no diamonds, which was what I wanted, but without a great engagement story, I feel like a loser... So my question is, can you be re-engaged? The wedding isn't going to be until 2010 or 2011 as we're still getting our lives in order (school, starting a business, etc.), so we've got lots of time, I just think it might hurt FI's feelings if I say that the first engagement wasn't exactly what I had always dreamed of as a child... Any advice? undecided.gif Or am I just being silly?

Most engagements aren't what was dreamed of. My FI didn't even get down on one knee. I was a sweaty mess from work, my hair was a disaster, I was wearing a sweatshirt and stained paints, we were in the pouring rain, and there was no big speech or anything.

When I tell people our story though, I say that FI came down to the city to help me out with some overtime work. When we finished up, we walked out of the building and it was pouring. We still went to Rockfeller Center anyway as originally planned. While over looking the ice skating rink (yes there were people skating in the rain) from under the big tree, Chris surprised me by pulling out a beautiful diamond ring and asking me to marry him.

When asked about the getting down on one knee, I simply say that he couldn't because there was a big puddle near by and because he didn't do that traditional gesture, we were about to have a special private moment in the middle of a crowded touristy area.

It's all about perception. Take the positives out of your engagement and don't worry about it not being your dream engagement. Just be happy you're engaged to the man you want to marry!

i agree w/ kristy. they can't all be picture perfect, but i wouldn't change mine for anything...it certainly wasn't perfect - no down on one knee, hell he didn't even actually ask me until i told him i'd take the ring but i wouldn't marry him until he asked!

if you're happy about who you're marrying, then who cares about anyone else?

I agree, our engagement wasnt at all what I had in my head, which made it even better. Every engagement is different and in my opinion happens a way for a reason. Are you guys less formal and just that comfortable with each other? As long as your entire love story is a beautiful one IMHO no reason for your engagement which only lasts minutes usually to be the only beautiful part of your relationship tale.

Now I know why I love this board so much love.gif We're pretty private people, and could really give a crap what anyone else thinks, I've just been letting all of these little things get to me lately (mainly drama trickling down from my two older sisters who have yet to grow up... BangHead.gif) So every minor detail that isn't PERFECT between me and him lately just plays on my mind and makes me doubt that he cares about me like he does.... I think I just need a good stiff drink smile120.gif

Thanks everyone :) I AM going to marry the man of my dreams, who cares how we came to the decision? cheesy.gif

lol! That almost sounds like Marc!! My sister basically looked at my brother-in-law a few years ago and said "Okay, we're getting married" so she ordered her wedding set on ebay lol So I'm used to weird proposals, I just thought I was supposed to have the "dream" proposal, but it's a dream to just marry this guy, so who cares how we came to the decision ^_^ And now we've picked the resort and the date, and I'm SO excited! It's a little over a year and a half, but I've got SO much to do cheesy.gif There's OOT bags, STD's, invites, where shall I start? smile120.gif

We have been talking about getting married for years, but with me being in school and then the kids, it was being put off. Then I told him no more babies until we are married. He had got me a birthstone ring as a temporary ring until he got the actual e-ring, and had it hanging up on the antlers of his deer head. I knew that it was there, and what it was for and was just waiting for him to actually ask me. He came home from work, sat on the couch next to me as a held our 2 month old son who was fussing and then told me I should go check on our daughter down the hall. I told him he could and when he kept pushing for me to go, I got up and went down the hall mutter under my breath about him being a lazy ass or something close to that! LMAO. Then I came back to the couch and sat down still trying to console our son and told him in a grumpy tone that she was fine!!! Then he leans over, grabs my hand and puts the ring on my finger and asks me to marry him. I looked up at the deer head and then back at him and realized why he wanted me to go check on Hailey. It was totally not the way that I thought it would happen and it wasn't really that romantic in the least, but it made our talks offical.

Mine wasn't what I thought it would be either but the words he said and the look on his face made it amazing!smile159.gif

He told me after that he had been planning this big eleborate proposal and he kept getting too nervous to do it. So one night he was sitting at his computer and I came to give him a hug and I sat on his lap then he started tickling me so much that I was falling on the floor laughing when I went to go get up he had pulled the ring out of his printer and asked me to marry him and then he got on one knee and said alot of really sweet stuff. He was so nervous he was stuttering and got on his knee for the wrong part but it was so cute!
