We are planning on having a big AHR about 2 weeks after we get home. We only have about 12 going to mexico with us so we want a reception for family and friends. Does it sound tacky to have a beach themed reception? We will be holding it in my father in laws backyard. (He owns 40 acres of land). Has anyone ever heard of renting a dancefloor though??

Plus, our friends all trade off on a holiday party (1 friend does christmas, another new years canada day etc...) Ours is May 2-4 so we will be having a party anyway. So it won't be a big production. We will likely invite more than the usual number of people though, and maybe have a pig roast. mmmmm.... :)
What is a buck and Doe? I must be clueless... is it a tradition?

I don't think it sounds tacky, this is kind of what we were thinking if we did anything just a casual bbq in my dads backyard, but I just don't want to plan anything else!

I think its the equivalent of a Jack & Jill, basically a wedding shower for couples, usually in the evening, more of a party than a shower.

Yes exactly. Believe me, I never heard of them before moving here. It's more of a small town thing, I understand. So, here's the components to a buck n doe:

1. Cover at the door. This generally covers the cost of booze.

2. Cheap drinks. HAHA Enough to make money but not so much that people will go to the bar instead.

3. Games games games. There's a crown and anchor (kind of like roulette but the wheel has symbols)

Loonie toss. Slap a 40 ozer of whisky on the floor and from about 50 feet people toss loonies at the bottle. The one closest gets the bottle. :) I've lost tons of $$ on that one at b&d's I've been to haha.

We are NOT having AHR, I can't imagine having to plan both... But so many of our friends are coming to Mexico that we don't really need one.

We are doing a 'blessing' in the church the weekend after (to appease FMIL since our wedding in the sand in Mexico is not in a church and she's not happy about it [that's a whole other story...]). We'll invite FI's great aunt and a few others that can't make it to Mexico to the blessing and we'll just go to brunch afterwards. nothing fancy...

Okay, this is a little different than I was thinking, lol, but it sounds like a lot of fun!! Some of the jack & jills I've been to we've bought tickets and that goes to the couple, others we've just bought gifts.

But we've never done the games, that sounds like it will be fun! rockon.gif

I agree sounds like fun. I don't know about the whole friends spending lots of money - i think I woudl prefer gifts. I mean i would feel more comfortable with gifts than money... ACTUALLY I don't know what I think of it. I just like the party idea..hehe It's cool that you can celebrate and party as a couple too!
