Has anyone gone to a dietician?

Recommended Posts

Hi girls,

Have any of you been to a dietitian? Was it worth it? Did you attain your goal? I am thinking about going with hopes of becoming more healthy and definitely lose some weight (I hope this will come with the healthy eating). I know I have to exercise as well, but I have to wait until I am off accutane to start my regime again.

Honestly, do not waste your money on a dietician. Go buy a book called Eating Clean by Tosca Reno. It's a mere fraction of the cost you'd spend on a dietician and gives you the same info. I have paid dieticians and personal trainers and everything I learned from them about how to eat right was in the eating clean book, I wish it had been recommended to me long ago so I didn't throw away so much money with a dietician and a trainer!

Other people have told me this, but I wasn't sure if they were being 'hooty tooty' about it (because they are stick-thin!) or what. But yeah, I can see where you are coming from. I heard they just go to the food guide and say "here follow this, and your total is $300". But, I just wanted to see what you girls thought. So, you also enlisted a personal trainer? I was looking into have a few sessions to get on a program (and have someone hold me accountable) and then just go back to have my program adjusted based on my progress (<-- that's my hopeful thinking wink.gif

I agree with Maura, there are other ways to learn how to eat. You can find some good free/cheap info on the internet and in books. I'm going to check out the book Maura mentioned because I haven't read it, and I recommend a book called Never Be Sick Again by Raymond Francis. It covers lifestyle a-z but there is great diet info there.

If you feel having a dietician gives you someone to check in with or makes you feel like you are getting personalized care I get it, but you don't need one to succeed or understand diet. Good luck :)

i had a personal trainer from feb 07-may 08 - it got to be way too expensive and i just couldnt afford it anymore with the money i needed to be putting toward the wedding. but yes, having a trainer for say, about 5-6 sessions, will do you a lot of good to get you on a program, so you know what will work and more importantly WHY it works. let me tell you also i am not stick thin, i am 5'2" and have struggled with my weight throughout my 20s. i weigh 138 pounds which is considered overweight for my height! the best thing you can do for yourself is eat clean and exercise. i recently started taking alli to help with a little extra weight loss for the wedding. after the wedding is over in a few weeks, i think i will go back to working out regularly, but right now im just too drained and it feels like such a chore.

I think I will definitely "invest" in a personal trainer for a few session just to build a program. I have been to see one just once ( to see what it was all about) and she did say it's all up to me. If I wanted to just have a couple here and there, she was okay with that. The good thing is, she works out of our city leisure centre, so it's only $35 an hour, or you can buy them in packages of 5 for like $120 (or something like that). So it's not bad at all. I am 5'8" and 153 lbs and my weight is distributed fairly evenly. My lowest I've ever been is 122 (but that'll never happen again!). I'd like to lose 20 lbs but I know it would be misery to do it. So, I'd be happy with 10-15 lbs. I think that's attainable seeing as my wedding is Feb 1, 2010!! Anyway, sorry for the rambling! I'm going to check out the books you and starchild recommended! Thanks!

I'm also a 2010 bride - I'm 25 and probably around 155lbs just now, and am 5'5" - can't believe i have got to this weight, but the older i have got, the lazier i have got!! But my aim is to get down to about 135-140 pounds for the wedding.

for now, my aim is to not gain anymore weight. I've got a really good gym membership so will just try to start using that again, get in the routine of going, and make it a part of my life...then once i'm used to that, i'll start a weight lose programme.

Easier said that done though!!...

I totally get what you're saying. I sit here and think, plan, and talk about exercising, yet it's so much easier said than done. Last year i was training for a half marathon but shin splints/stress fractures happened, so I had to quit everything until they healed. Now I'm starting all over. NO FUN. maybe we can provide moral support for each other as the day gets closer! What is your wedding date? We're hoping to book Feb 1, 2010!
