Is your ring Cathedral set?

Recommended Posts

Mine is cathedral setting. Its from Blue Nile as well. Almost exactly the same. I have scratched a few of my student with it. Totally accident! ANd my new dog likes to attack it....

I didnt know that you can get another kind of setting besides cathedral. I think my first engagement like 10 years ago was cathedral as well.

i looked at it again & it seems like her's isn't as close to the stone. there is a bigger gap for things to get between the stone & setting.

my ring sits up really high. I thought it was going to get caught on things all the time or rip my latex gloves. I'm surprised it's never an issue.

I just googled cathedral set rings & I do think there is a bigger gap on hers. So ignore what I said. I've never worn a cathedral set, so I'd trust the girls that have them.

there is nothing between my diamond and the setting since the dimension of my diamond is almost the same depth wise as it is on the face. I notice that other women that are en engaged always look at my ring from the side to actually see how big it really is... wtf is up with thathuh.gif I do have the similar ring and the 2 arcs on the sides can get dirty. sometimes soap or stuff can get caught but its not that much of a hassle.

just FYI, you can have those gaps filled, tara. i didnt like the gaps in the blue nile ring and so jose had the jeweler who made my ring fill them in when he custom made my ring. if you'd like i can take a photo of my ring from the side so you can see. nothing gets in there and it doesnt get dirty thanks to having the gaps filled in.

I had a Cathedral setting for almost a year for a round diamond. After 10 months, I switched to a different band. Even tho I was very cautious because it was set higher, each time I accidentally banged it against something (like brushing against a doorframe once, and one other time when I hit it on the kitchen counter)--- both times, it loosened the prong and the head had to be replaced. From my understanding, there were a couple things that could have contributed to this effect: 1) the band was white gold, and gold is more flexible than some other metals, 2) each time a metal is melted down and re-used, it affects the strength of the metal--- so if the gold had been melted down from some other ring, then used to make the head of my ring, it could have broken down the metal and made it more susceptible to damage.

Either way, I wound up replacing either prongs or the head 3 times total in that 10 month timeframe and that was about enough for me to realize I should change my band.

here ya go tara wink.gif i took photos of it up next to a ruler so you can get a better idea for size, and then one of my view looking down at it on my finger. sorry they're slightly blurry, but i couldnt use the flash because it reflected too much off the diamond & gold. (by the way, my FI thinks im crazy now haha - he said to me "WHAT are you doing taking photos of your ring next to a rulerhuh.gif")

Ha! Thanks Maura! Your ring is really pretty! I love the way yours looks. I think the difference between yours and the one I saw at the store is the one at the store had a much more pronounced cathedral setting... If that makes sense. wish I would have taken a picture of it. The sides came up to almost the middle of the diamond setting, and there was a gap in between the diamond and the band. Gosh, this is hard to explain! But the empty spaces under the cathedral part of the band, and where you finger is, was a lot larger than on your ring. It was almost as if the setting as the main focus of the ring. That's what I had a hard time with.

I asked them if they could close the "gap" but they said no.
