Hi There!!

I guess at this time you're legally married!! I must say, I love the idea of going for mexican food/drinks afterwards! That's so fun!

Did you guys do the legal part in your hometown and not mexico to avoid the blood work and legal stuff down there (translation etc)?

We're in the same boat and are going to be doing the legal ceremony here in a very casual/informal fashion. I do feel a bit guilty as our friends/family won't be there to witness but the way i look at it is, i won't feel actually married until i'm in my dress with the aisle, the flowers, our friends, family etc etc etc.

Do you agree? Should I feel bad that we're doing this without everyone? We too won't celebrate this day as our anniversary as it's merely for the paperwork. We'll be doing the 'renewal of vows/religious ceremony' in mexico so it's a) cheaper and B) since we'll already be married, we'll be getting all the 'honeymoon' perks!! so it actually works out great!

Any comments? Thanks!! (kinda stressing about/feeling guilty).

I felt the same at first. Like we'd be tricking everyone or something. We were very secretive about the way we were doing it at first. We planned on making legal day uneventful to not take away from the actual day.

As it got closer I started getting excited about the legal day & realized that we can just make it it's own seperate fun thing. I started telling everyone so just about all our guests know. Everyone sounds happy about it.

We live out of state from all of our family. We just invited 2 friends to come with us as witnesses. We made a really silly, fun day out of it. But, I don't really feel married. I'm not going by my new name just yet and we didn't exchange rings. We opened a joint checking account this week and that made me feel more married than actually getting married did.

Also, as my ceremony approaches I've realized that nothing can take away the anticipation & special feelings about that day. I was worried our guests would feel like "whats the point, they are already married." but, I think the ceremony will still be special to them too. I'll report back if it felt weird for any reason once we got there

We did it this way for several reasons

1. It's $1,000 cheaper. This varies by hotels, but the legal package was $1,000 more than the symbolic.

2. I was able to set our date much earlier because they didn't need to schedule the judge. I wanted the date set last july so I could start sending out save the dates. We booked our trip in august. I would have been nervous doing all of that before we were scheduled.

3. Once I'm in mexico I don't really want to spend time with legal stuff like the blood work. I don't have an issue with having my blood drawn, but I don't want to spend time doing that when i could be at the beach.

4. We want our certificate ASAP & I think it can take a while to do all the stuff when it's from mexico. Translations, etc. Once we are married mike can work out at the duke university gym with me & he has been so anxious for that spouse pass. I joke that he is marrying me for the spouse pass. Our gym shut down 1 1/2 years ago & we considered a shotgun wedding so he could get a spouse pass. It also allows him to get in to duke basketball games.

5. We want to do our own personal ceremony & have it be in english. The legal cermeony has to be a specific script & is in spanish. The words in that ceremony don't really reflect us like the script we are using does.

6. our wedding is on a saturday, so even if we did it legal in mx the date on our certificate would say friday's date.

7. any excuse to eat fajitas is good for me :)

The two friends that came as witnesses were excited to share in this day with us. Neither can attend the wedding so it was a great way to still be a part of it.
