With rising fuel costs, this has been the model in Europe for some time. Flights in Europe are cheap but they charge you for luggage by weight and they charge plenty. The extra luggage weight reduces fuel efficiency and wipes out the profit margin. The airline industry here in the States has kept prices low throughout the climbing price of oil but they can't keep losing money. Expect to travel to larger cities to fly as flight routes are reduced and expect to pay for your luggage. it's the only way the airlines can survive.

Airtran starts may 15th, but their 2nd bag is only $10.

I'm pretty sure these are all each way.

We will really have to be careful when we go home for Christmas. We usually have trouble fitting everything in our 4 checked bags. I told Mike he has to stop building computers for our family. Last year we flew home 2 computers. He builds his dad a new computer everytime we go home. He is flying home wednesday with another one.

I would rather see the airlines do this than raise prices on tickets.

I just bought SW seats for the end of May and was told that at this time there were no plans to change the baggage allowance.

I know that Northwest and Delta have changed their baggage policy to any person flying on or after May 5th will have to follow the new rules and only have 1 free bag.

I called my TA who got in touch with the Airline and they gace us exemption from this new policy because we were a group of 30 and we had purchased back in September of 07. She then drafted a letter on agency letterhead with her name & contact info, our group number, and the airline contact and detailed our exemption. If any of you are traveling with a group it might be somethng to check into!
