Which make-up to buy?

Recommended Posts

I know a lot of women like sephora and bare minerals, and I'm sure it works really well, but I just can't get myself to spend that much money either. I guess if I had to I would. I really like Mary Kay's new stuff. They just opened a whole line of mineral make up. There is foundations, blushs, eyeshadows, bronzers, and high lighters! So if you know a consultant I'm sure they could get you some samples for free and you can decide if you like it before you buy it.

My counsin actually sells Mary Kay. I called her yesterday to ask her about it and she said her SIL just bought and likes it as well as she likes the Bare Minerals plus the foundation is only $18 (and I will get a discount cause I am her favorite cousin..lol) I might try it but I think I am going to make a trip into the Sephora first I think.

Bare Minerals/Bare Escentuals is the only stuff I have used so far that is 1.) idiot proof (which I need) and 2.) effective without looking silly. Keep in mind I know nothing about foundation, only lips & mascara. But I wore this on my wedding day and I still looked like me, only smoother if that makes sense.

Play around with different brands and see what suits you. Good luck!
You sound just like me! I totally am not sure I can put my own make-up on. I have been searching the internet for tips and ideas of what I want to attempt to do but I prolly will break down and spend the money on having it professionally done..lol I really need to learn to do my own. I am 31 years old! I have a 13 year old soon to be step-daughter who does a better job on her make up!:-)

I use the Bare Minerals/Bare Escentuals and I really, really like it....My friend had made the investment first and kept telling me to get it...finally I did (over a year ago) and I like it a lot. My only suggestion would be to go to a CVS (if you have one) and purchase a mineral type makeup there bc if you dont like it you can always return it. (Sephora also takes back the makeup if you dont like it and can get a full refund). Good luck :)

I LOVE my Bare Minerals makeup. I've been using it for about year and a half or so. The first time I used it was when I got my makeup done for my sister's wedding. She was a professional makeup artist and she said that is all she uses. As far as photography with mineral makeup, I thought my skin looked the best it ever had with this makeup and the photos looked great IMO. I didn't notice any reflections on mine or my sister's faces & we both got our makeup done by her. So..after that I ordered my own and like I said, I love it.

As far as other mineral makeup goes, once I had forgotten my makeup when I had to go out of town for work. I ran over to Wal-Mart and bought another's version of mineral foundation. It was horrible, very orangey (and I'm very fair skinned), didn't blend well, yuck. So, in the end as with everything, you get what you pay for.

Sephora would be a great place to go in and have them help you. I ordered mine off the TV deal and it gets auto-delivered. Either way, I give it thumbs up. Good luck, hope my long story helps... :)

My $.02...I'm a huge Bare Minerals fan...I too had been egged on by a friend to try it for over a year before actually getting some.

What I would recommend...if you're thinkin of going the Bare Minerals route...there are a lot of the BM sellers on ebay that sell their products in sample sizes. (clean samples just from larger jars!) So for maybe $10-$15 total, you can try a couple different shades of the foundation (remember, you can blend them to create your perfect formula!) as well as a blush and/or eye shadow! It's a great way to try it without making that huge $$$ investment. I don't wear eye shadow a lot, but like to be a little different when I do...and being able to buy the samples has allowed me to try all sorts of different fun colors I wouldn't have normally bought because of the $$$ involved!

Great advise. Since I have never used mineral make-up I really never put thought into mixing the shades. My cousin is going to order the Mary Kay version for herself and since she is I am going to do like you suggest and get the samples from ebay. I guess then we can compair. I also did not know, until this thread, that you can get mineral eyeshadows and suchs. Now I have to buy even more make-up..lol I guess it is an investment though. I really need to put some more time into me. Since starting this wedding planning (weight loss, tanning, nails) I really have taken more of an interest in my appearance and hope to keep it up!

I personally used Laura Mercier and I loved it, I still use it now.
Back in September I was really wanting a make up change so I went to Sephora and tried out the Bare Minerals and was in love! The coverage is awesome and it really is an investment at first, just to get everything started. But the other good thing is that all the kits come with the right brushes and instructions to get the job done. Since spending the $200 on the starter kit, stila gel eyeliner and application brush, sephora lip liner and new lip gloss, 2 Bare Minerals eyeshadows (which are only about $13 each) and blush....which all in all was alot of make up.

Being a photographer I am very make up savy and I have a few friends who are professional make up artist one of which works for MTV, Dave LaChapelle (famous photographer) and M. Night Shamalon. With that being said I have never heard that you can't photograph SPF make up. True there are certain make ups that photograph better than others, for instance MAC is a Studio make up meaning it's heavy and made for the purpose of photographing in the studio. But it's all in the look you're going for. Bare Minerals can be manipulated to give you the the look you want there are kits for "smokey eyes" and really just about anything. If your wedding is on the beach then you are NOT going to want a product like MAC, your face will melt. For an everyday look Bare Minerals is the way to go....

I hope this helped you...

You def want to stay away from makeup with SPF, (mineral make-up generally does not usually have tendencies to reflect.) You will get a white reflected look in your pics. I used to sell bare minerals/naked minerals. They are great make-ups for those who do not generally wear it, because they are natural looking. I would begin wearing it, even if it is only for a couple hours a day around two weeks before your weddig. Some people break out when switching products and you want to avoid that. :)

Any good professional photographer will know how to light any situation and even if your make up has an SPF in it your photographer shouldn't be blasting you with flash or stick you in a harsh lighting situation where that might be a problem. But in all honesty.....I am a classicly trained photographer with 5 years of college under my photography belt and 10 years working the professional field I've never heard that you can't photograph SPF make up. It might have been a sales tactic to get you to buy more expensive make up. And then again maybe it was never mentioned because we were taught how to properly light.

I my experience with liquid SPF make ups they always made me break out anyway.

Good Luck!

I think everyone has talked me into the bare minerals:-) I believe there is a Sephora store in one of the malls that I go to so I think I am going to make the trip this weekend. What is even more exciting is my mom just handed me some money and said "to buy whatever I want". Her rules were that I was not to spend it on my kids or my FH so I guess this is a great excuse to get it! Along with the make-up, I think I will get my veil (just a blusher) and shoes and hopefully some clothes for the trip! Gotta love my momma!! LOL
