Who was in a sorority?

No no. She constantly has events and she gets fined when she can't go. For example, she had to work and tried to get it off but she got denied and missed event. I think they charged her $25. Then another time she had to leave my grandparents 50th anniversary party early for something. She has had a hard time doing the "bridal" stuff with me too.

 

Plus she has been put on study tables and she's a senior. I think that's crazy. Her overall GPA is above a 3.0 but she did bad one term. Maybe it's just her sorority... She loves the girls, but she hates all the rules.

Oh boy...I was a Pi Beta Phi at University of WA....dropped after 2 years...not a good experience for me. Unfortunately I was the only girl out of a freshman class of 40 that had to work. I never quite felt like it was for me. I did meet FI however out of the whole situation....he was a Sigma Chi, and still very close to his frat buddies.

my FI was desperately prying and wanting to know why i was so loyal to my sorority sisters. i tried to explain in minimal detail, about the initiation church ceremony etc etc, he didnt get it and dropped it. but he didnt like that it was something i was hesitant to share, because he always tells me he "has no secrets" from me. i did feel a little guilty about telling him, but i didnt go into great detail.

every chapter is different, but generally you only get fined when you break the rules... i was the risk management chair, and we gave out fines for alcohol violations and other serious offenses that got our chapter on probation with our national office. my chapter was laid back when i joined and had barely any rules which is what got us in trouble. once we had rules, things went much more smoothly. some chapters are really strict, but its a bond i am happy to have and to have been a part of. i may not have met my best friends otherwise. sometimes the girls who are on the exec board are bitches on a power trip, i will tell you that, and my chapter had a few for sure. there are usually always ways out of the fines too. it all depends on what they're for. honestly, joining a sorority was a hugely positive experience for me because i always had a hard time making friends with other girls because i dont play catty BS games. i was a transfer student my soph yr, and a lot of sororities turned me away because i was not worth 3.5 years of dues... they cut me immediately after finding out i wasnt a freshman. my sorority welcomed me with open arms, and the girls who were my own age treated me as if i was a part of their pledge class, and my own pledge class looked up to me for being a leader. for me, it was the single most positive experience i had in college aside from studying abroad.

Yes, there are fines if you don't attend events. In my sorority there were so many girls who would flake out and not go. It didn't look right when we had a mixer and there were only ten girls out of 80 there.

By my Senior year I was over the rules too! I went alum after four years (it took me five years to graduate). It was pretty cool not having to attend meetings, etc...but if I wanted to I could but there was no pressure.

Now I feel bad. I didn't mean to make it seem like I was bagging on sororities. I wasn't in one so I can't say what you get from them. I've only witnessed the stress my sister has experienced with juggling a personal life, job, school work and sorority functions. It could be her too. She sucks at time management.

Strangely, I am in a fraternity... however our current brothers are all girls so we are pretty much a sorority.

 

It's a professional pharmacy fraternity (there are no pharmacy sorority that I am aware of) called Kappa Psi. I was never into it during undergrad... but I absolutely love it right now in my professional career. We still have many of the rules and what not, but the focus is different. The girls are my best friends and we have a great time. I can't imagine getting through these four years w/out them.

It can be overwhelming to be in a sorority, there is a lot asked of you...but you know that going in.
