Photojournalism is capturing events as they naturally happen without interrupting or creating anything. A photojournalist would not direct a client where to stand or how to position themselves at all. If a photojournalist wanted to take a dress shot or a ring shot - they wouldn't move it to a prettier or more artistic setting - they would shoot it where they saw it. When you think of photojournalism, think of a newspaper photographer - they need everthing to be absolutely truthful/accurate - and not contrived in any way. Some wedding and portrait photgraphers are strict photojournalists as well.

A lifestyle photographer is documenting a lifestyle or event. They may move things around to re-position people or things. This is the approach that I take. Honestly, I think I can sometimes better tell the story of the day (or the family or whatever) by moving things around. I also enjoy getting artistic shots of the couple.

I hope that makes sense! :)

exactly! - If you'd like to get a better definition of photojournalism, you can view the nppa's (natl. press photog's assc.) - website @ National Press Photographers Association and view their code of ethics. -

of course, I am biased to photojournalists though! :)

oh.... there was one more major point I wanted to make -- Just because a wedding photographer claims to have a photojournalistic style - that does NOT always mean they truly act like photojournalists --- If you want to avoid the pushy - in your face - traditional wedding photographer - you will want to ask questions on how they go about taking their shots - and take those answers just as much into consideration as the actual images. - There is nothing worse than having a photog in your face annoying you all day long on your wedding day!

Oh ya and I have seen some really rude photogs on the wedding day. My FBIL almost killed his photog on his wedding day because she was so pushy and rude. It was like she was trying to snap the required pics and get the heck out of there.

My cousin had a photog rearrange her and the BMs bouquets because they didn't "look right." She was so mad. I think it's very important to ensure your personality meshes well with all of the vendors you are in contact with. If they seem pushy now, they probably will be the day of the wedding too. You don't need that added stress!

Lol -- I hope not!! -- haha -- I honestly think its just a difference in the generations - alot of older / more traditional style photogs tend to be this way.... while the younger ones take the exact opposite approach! -- I dont know what it is!!
