this is the 2nd review I have seen where a safe was drilled open at ROR... that's a little alarming. The other posting was on trip advisor and the girl said the hotel was not willing to do anything about it. She and her husband figured out it was the maintenance man who was suppose to fix the fan in thier room but the hotel never did anything. Are ya'll going to suggest to your guests that they not use the safe? I don't want to alarm people but I also don't want to make them easy targets.

So, it seems like we shouldn't use the safes, huh? Is everyone going to lock up their money/belongings in their suitcases? feedback.gif

I'll have to see if I even have a lock??
Well to be honest, you should always lock up your suitcase with a lock when you travel, Ive seen a few cases where people when to get their suitcase at the aiport and it was half open and they had items missing...its gotten to the point where we dont even unpack any more, we just live out of our suitcase, but Im pretty sure once you go with that 'nothing can ruin my day' attitude everything will be fine....

Yeah, but for those of us flying from the states, we CAN'T lock our bags before we fly, thanks to TSA.

Even if we lock up the suitcase, can't they just take the whole bag or cut it with a knife or scissors? If they are going as far as to drill into a safe, I don't think that a knife or scissors are above them.

Leaving stuff in a drawer or something worries me.

Any ideas?

wow, that sucks that you cant lock up your suitcase, it kinda leaves you at the mercy of the people checkin your bags in. But in terms of locking it up in your suitcase I think you have a better chance because then the evidence would be obvious, because a lot of times what happens is its the maintenance people that go in so them having a drill is no problem but it would be kinda weird for him to be draggin a suitcase with him and no one see or wonder why he has a suitcase....I dont know how to explain it but I just feel a little better keeping it in my suitcase, maybe its false sense of security but I guess either way isnt the greatest.....

Here's an additional comment from the Riu Bride that this happened to. I went back to the site where she posted this today & she entered this last comment:

"Wow - didn't realize that was so long...sorry!!

I just also wanted to say that I hope nobody thinks twice about booking at the RIU because of what happened to me - it really could happen anywhere and after the appropriate manager and Tammy were involved it was handled wonderfully. The resort is GORGEOUS and every single wedding I saw there was beautiful - it realllly is a wonderful place to get married and the people in Jamaica are some of the nicest people I have ever met..

Just wanted to make sure I didn't scare anyone away :) There is no reason to worry - the problem was resolved and we had a wonderful wedding and honeymoon!!"

So its comforting to know that everything went well with the wedding with the exception of the theft incident to the point that she doesn't want to deter anyone from booking the Riu.

In terms of my guests, I'm just going to advise them to be careful with any personal items as they would at any other hotel, on any other trip. I too don't want to alarm them but at the same time I don't want them to go uninformed.

Oh and quick question, I can't remember the last time I used Traveler's Checks, but if they are stolen from you, can you get them replaced? I think I remember that they can be replaced as long as you know the #'s of the checks? Does anyone know about that?

I think American Express Travelers Checks are definitly the way to go. I'm going to email the resort and ask if they will cash them Most hotels will. That way we could just cash how ever much we think we will need for the day. Just make sure you keep the checks hidden separate from the #s and if they do happen to get stolen, report it immediately before they can be used.
