Yeah....that is not normal to be treated that way....and it is definately not acceptable nor should she go unpunished. If you have a certain number of sick days there should be no reprocussions for taking what is owed to you. Having no HR "department" makes things especially sticky. You should definately look into some labor laws and then present this horrid lady with backup proof she is a big meany. Everyone is right...she will get what is coming to her! Kill them all with kindness.....when your 6 months is up you can leave knowing you did the best you could under super emotional circumstnaces. You deserve a damn medal for not punching her fryingpan.gif

Directly from our handbook:

"Absences must be reported to the Executive Director. Administrators must call extension 2102 at least two (2) hours prior to their scheduled time on duty if they are going to be absent or expect to be late. Failure to call in advance will result in an unpaid day even if sick time is available. Administrators must also call the office by noon if the absence is to continue. These procedures must be followed to determine eligibility for paid days."

Did they know on Friday that you were going to be out? And how come checking in with email and your phone messages doesn't count? I think she is just an evil bitch, b/c who would enforce that rule to the letter given everything that you have been going thru lately.

I think everyone else has had it right above when they say you are strong for not punching that wench right in the face and quitting right there.

It really isn't fair and you certainly are being tested lately. Let me know if there is anything I can do.

That handbook makes no sense. What do they do about sick dayshuh.gif? You have to notify them two days beforehuh.gif HUHhuh.gif Um, ok - let's build a time machine that brings us back two days when we wake up sick. MORONS!!!!

You know, you could try to call their bluff. Maybe you can call both the HR person and your boss into a meeting and let them know (in a nice way) that you think they are being unfair and you just want to give them a heads up that you plan on contacting a lawyer about your rights. Maybe they'll change their tune before this has to go any further. You never know.

You know what I decided? Eff the stupid written laws, basic human decency should've directed her to allow you some leeway this time. Or if she had a problem with it, to call you at home and say "I know you have a lot going on, but we really need you to call in to let us know you aren't coming in." How frigging hard is that? I think you should post their company name so we all know who to avoid and quit immediately. We all know you are intelligent and talented and you will find another job. If you can't quit immediately, PLEASE, please, please, begin the job hunt now!

we want to move out of the area after the wedding, try something new. Maybe I'll just go ahead and make the move and Reggie can come join me when he's done with school in January.

First of all, you are covered by FMLA. As long as your doctor verifies that you were incapacitated for 3 consecutive days, then you should be qualified. I have seen FMLA granted for those with anxiety issues as well so I think what you were dealing with would fit the criteria.

However, my company does mandate that those on "pending" FMLA call in to work every day they are out until their FMLA has been officially approved. You can be disciplined for not calling in, but your boss can not refuse to pay you if you qualify for FMLA.

We require those that file for FMLA do so 2 days upon their return to work. I don't know if this is a FMLA mandated rule or our companies. I would check into your companies policies and submit your FMLA paperwork ASAP.

On the more important your note, your boss sounds like a vile human being. To not be empathetic towards your situation not only makes her a horrible boss, but a horrible person. Yes companies have policies and procedures, but there are exceptions to the rules (I see it in my company all the time.) There isn't an excuse for cruelty towards someone who has undergone a hardship. I think she should have been able to see the bigger picture and turned her cheek to your "so called violation" of policies.

Hang in there Heidi.
