Picking Your Menu

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! We are going to Cabo in 3 weeks for our site visits, and hope to pick our menus, etc. A big concern i have is making sure no one gets sick from the food. We will be holding our reception at one of the big hotels (either Westin, Sheraton, or Hilton) and hope to have a RD somewhere in town, such as Baja Cantina, or a sunset cruise. Usually when I go to Mexico 9and this hasnt been in over 5 years) I am very careful what I eat and drink (i.e. no water, ice cubes, salad, basically anything washed in water). Has anyone taken this into account when planning their menu? It seems hard to plan a 3 course seated dinner with no salad! Am I just being over cautious?

Hi Alisa,

I have been here since Thursday and have eaten/drank everything short of tap water and been 100% fine. We had lettuce salad at our welcome dinner and I've had ice cubes in everything. I haven't been sick nor have any of my guests (to my knowledge). I realize that the chance is always there, but I wonder if Cabo is somehow "cleaner" than other parts of Mexico and it's not as big of a problem here?

We were just as concerned but I did a lot of asking around. We had the margaritas at the Tabasco beach bonfire and nobody got sick. We also served salads at Sunset Da Mona Lisa and that seemed to be fine also. I think it all depends on where you go.

Well, I guess we were the unlucky ones. We stayed at the Presidente for 3 days and were fine. Then we stayed at the Riu for 4 days and on our last night there I was up all night long and attached to the toilet. I literally got less than 2 hours of sleep because I was so sick. Then for the next 2 weeks I couldn't get too far from a bathroom (sorry, TMI). Jeff had a milder case than me, but his stomach was kinda a mess too. The only thing I could think of that night was that we ate at the steakhouse on the resort for the first time, and for the first time I had salad. Jeff only had a couple bites (probably why he wasn't as bad), but I ate the whole salad.

By a strange coincidence, we ran into a high school classmate of Jeff's on her honeymoon at Riu while we were there and spent some time with them, but they left three days after us. When we got back, I started going to her for facial treatments (she's an aesthetician) and found out that she and her husband had the exact same problem, and they ate at the steakhouse and had the salad...

Lesson to be learned for me- NO SALAD!

Maybe it's better at other places, but I only want to go through that one time in my life. Do you know how miserable it is to work a 12 hour shift and need to run to the bathroom constantly?? smile27.gif

sarah, try to get a prescription of cipro for your wedding, kay? just in case it happens again the cipro should take care of it...

and not to scare anyone getting married at riu but they were having some big food issues, with lots of people getting sick but it seems to be resolved. for some reason i read that the whole resort at riu is not on a filtered water system. some review said that on some bathrooms there are stickers that say the sink water is not filtered.

but like i said, these issues seem to be reseolved.

Yeah, you would think as an RN I would be prepared, right? Nope- but next time I will be. I just kept thinking to myself that any day it'll get better and if not, I'll go to the doctor, but I was working so much i just kept putting it off.
Riu is not on a filtered water system, and yes, I did see the stickers on the sink. We didn't drink the water, but we drank an awful lot of mixed drinks, that could have done it too.
I'm glad to hear they have that under control now- it sure was not fun, but it would not deter me from going back to the Riu, we had sooo much fun there!

Tim did get sick after the wedding, and we have narrowed it down to the breakfast at Pueblo Bonito Rose, or one of the drinks he had from the pool bar. The thing is that nobody else was sick that night, so it was just him and I had his drink also.... I think it's just very individual, and you never can really tell where it comes from. I ate salads and plenty of mixed drinks and I was fine.
