Military restrictions in mexico

Recommended Posts

I know the warnings about mexico are not new. My BIL has submitted his packet for approval and it is all coming down to what the commander says. If he says yes, then they can go. If he says no, my BIL cannot go, my sister may still have a chance to go but there is something still unclear to me...maybe someone in the army can clarify this for me...my sister has said that if the commander denies my BIL, she will not be able to travel because if she does, as his wife, she will get my BIL in trouble. This does not make any sense to me as she is a civilan.

This really scares me. My father is DOD and my fiance is active duty Army! Our wedding isn't until May 2011, so I'm hopeful of things getting better, but I'm also nervous about things getting worse!

Jerzygirl - My father was military, my fiance is military, and many of our friends are military... so I confirm for you that your sister is incorrect. The commander only has a say in what your BIL does, not his wife or kids. If he doesn't give your BIL permission to travel to Mexico, your sister can still go to your wedding.

OMG!! I didn't even think of this..... but my wedding is in a few months and my husband is Active Duty Army. He will just be getting back from Iraq.. and I didn't even think to make sure he got clearance. I just figured they would let him take off because we are getting married (we had a civil ceremony before he deployed). But since it is out of the country...this may be a different situation! OH NO!!! I am so glad I saw this thread. I will work on this tomorrow. And we already have almost 50 people booked to go to Cancun.

I would check and try to get approvals ASAP. My FI is in the Air Force, and I know this has been going on for a long time because we have considered going on a cruise at some point but have totally decided to not go near Mexico because of the ban. Good luck to all of you planning weddings in Mexico!

We definitely can't get any approvals this far out, it's over a year until our wedding, and my fiance will be moving to a different unit and location before then. But if it is any consolation, I just realized this thread started in February 2009.... and my fiance got approval without any hassle at all to go to Cancun in May 2009. We ended up canceling that trip because of the swine flu (there was a couple week period where military was banned from going there because of the swine flu, and it was during our trip!). But it makes me feel better knowing that we didn't even know about this ban last year at this time, and his commander signed off with no questions at all. Hopefully it'll be that way this time too!

FYI there has been some stuff coming up and I wouldn't be surprised if there is a ban on mexico again. I heard there were some serious emails that came down since last week 2 american civilians were killed sad.gif MY hubby has the commander's approval but you never know it could change so quickly sad.gif

DH's sister and brother are both Marines. There has been some stuff the last few days happening that doesn't surprise me if they put a ban. Although for our wedding in August they did have to have approval. They were told had it been one of the many border towns or areas w/ the many troubles of the drug war they wouldn't have been able to go. That was when there was alot going on. But even though we were going to the Riviera and at that time I believe the only drug war death there had been one plotted out against a mexican politician. But they still had to have approval to go Mexico. SIL was able to do her paperwork a couple months out but wrote in the wrong days she'd be there and had to resubmit in the couple of weeks before the wedding but still got approval.

But she did have a hold up because she needed proof that it was her brother (something official of his saying the same last name) and that we were having a wedding. The hotel owner and our WC wrote letters for us saying that we were having a wedding, on a certain day, etc, and we sent invoices of our hotel blocks and contract w/ the hotel. As soon as they saw all of that they instantly approved her leave to Mexico

Girls our commander asked if the resort had security as well. I guess that helps? We gave them all the info for our resort in Riviera Maya! Still crossing my fingers nothing bad happens!
