SAND CEREMONY - how to get it home??

I recently bought a glass vase with our future last name initial etched in it at hobby lobby. I want to seal it with wax (and actually make it a candle on top) but also don't know how to do this at the resort - or how to get it packed tightly enough that the wax doesn't just run through the sand. I'm actually not the one who's concerned about it staying as it will be on the day we're married but my fiance is the one who's concerned! haha. There's no top to the vase so I can't close it either. I might end up carrying it on my lap. We, too, are heading off on a cruise after a week at the wedding resort. We have to fly from Jamaica to puerto rico so i'm slightly worried but it'll be fine even if we have to re-do it at home.

My issue right now is with the pouring vases. What are you guys using? I really really want to stay away from glass because of the weight and breakability issues. I'm trying to take as few breakables as possible. My fiance suggested taking empty liquor bottles from the resort to use but i'm not so sure about this... I think my mom would flip out. (moms are pouring the "foundation"). Has anybody come across any good alternatives to glass??

ive seen people use sea shells and it looked really cool. you just have to do a "practice" run to make sure you use enough sand.

Thanks for this, we are planning on doing a Sand Ceremony using the picture frame and I'm not sure how I can get it home without it being all jumbled up!!

I was really concerned about getting it home also. I had planned on just carrying it on my carry on. On the day of the wedding though things were so busy that we ended up forgetting all about it and didn't remember till the next day. The wedding coordinator ended up packing it neatly away for me. Nice of her, however in the process it got mixed up... =( We just ended up re doing it when we got home! no one will ever know and now my girl friend who couldn't attend feel like she got to be a part of our day, as she was there when we re did it!!!

Good point about practicing before hand...wouldn't that be special to not have enough sand to fill the frame?! A small detail but one that could get missed!

Two questions:

1. Do you actually fill the whole thing during the ceremony? or do you just do a little bit for the pictures..?

2. Do each of us do one layer (like I pour and then he pours)...or do we do one layer with both pouring in at the same time, and then go on with alternating the colors??

I was thinking about just doing a little bit for the pictures, then dumping it out and redoing it when I get home.

Great ideas! The melted candle wax sounds like the best way to do it. I think they have candle wax in little balls that you could pour into the vase then melt with a lighter.
