LUCKILY I have traveled to the states many times in the past few years and have added considerable amounts of clothing to my wardrobe from Torrid & Lane Bryant. Plus I have a credit card/shopping addiction haha and like to purchase the odd thing from both stores since they both ship to Canada (WOOT!). I just purchased my wedding dress yesterday actually - it was my size and fit perfectly
+ they had just got it in the day before so I was able to take it with me since no-one else had tried it on.. but it had kind of been a struggle to find a dress up to this point. We got engaged back in May 2008 and I started dress shopping in August 2009 - I've probably been dress shopping only a handful of times up until yesterday but I just found the salespeople weren't very helpful... I got the sense that it was because I was a bigger girl and selection isn't as great as it is if your a size 2-6 haha. Luckily yesterday I was set up with a wonderful consultant and she kept pulling dress after dress for me plus the store had a HUGE selection. So I'm lucky that I found the ONE and glad that dress shopping is over with :)

Anyways I look forward to meeting you all - sorry for my novel of an intro!

So here's my question of the day....Have any of you thought of ever taking extreme measures to lose weight? I'm talking about medical procedures, stomach stapling (sp?), gastric bypass? Or have any of you done this? What are your thoughts on this?

hi Lisa,

No hun i have not ever thought off the extreme measures because my weight is borderline... I am a size 12 now... down from a 16 two years ago.

However with that said I have a friend Lisa that has had the gastric bypass done. She had it done in May 09 and she is now down over 150lbs.. She looks amazing and has a whole new out look on life. she has gone from a size 24 to a 12. If you are even considering this I would pass her email to you because I know she would love to talk to you about her journey.
I met her doctor because I was so freaked out about her doing that surgery and her son being left alone. Her doctor was amazing and he is the best in the field.

Take care Hun

I had a friend who talked to me about getting a lap band (?) put in her stomach. It's not as risky as gastric bypass and you can remove it.. but I can't ever see myself doing anything like that. The lowest I can remember being is 189.5. I think my brain saw that number on the scale and freaked/got scared.. I gained back over 30 pounds over the past 3 yrs. Working semi-hard to get back down there, but as you all know, it's not easy!

I weighed myself this morning ... it's been about 6 weeks since I stepped on the scale and Xmas just passed by.. was so petrified! Well, good news, I'm down 3 pounds since before Christmas (220.5)! We leave in 5 weeks.. I'd LOVE to lose another 5-6.

well, i have never actually considered it, but one of the last times i saw my doctor he had the balls to suggest it. all because at the time i was doing a low carb diet and asked whether there was a sugar free version of the cough syrup he had prescribed. facker. i seriously wanted to smack him.

BUT, i will never do any of the procedures like lapband or gastric bypass because they do not fix your HEAD, and *that* is where my problem lies, lol. they wouldn't work for me because they operate on the premise that you won't continue to eat things that make you SICK or eat beyond the point of feeling full (which should happen quickly with your newly minimized stomach capacity). i can't tell you how often i have eaten well beyond being full or feeling ill. overeating is a serious problem and for me, it's mental. no physical surgery can fix that.

however, my girlfriend at work got her gastric bypass surgery done in puerto vallarta almost two years ago, looks absolutely amazing, and i'm definitely jealous.

something else to consider: the divorce rate for people who have undergone radical weight-altering surgery is many times higher than for those who have not.

oh also, i'm pretty sure in order to qualify for gastric bypass surgery you need to be at least 100 lbs overweight, with a BMI of at least 40. your BMI or weight can be slightly lower than that if you suffer from any chronic health condition because of your weight.

Lisa- I have never seriously considered any surgeries for weight loss, I don't think I would qualify now, maybe at one point in my life I would have. I have lost a lot on my own, 40 lbs since July and I am still working at it. I would still like to lose at least another 20 before my wedding in June.

I would like to give you another perspective that is different than the other stories here, I have a friend that also had it but unlike the success stories the girls have shared about their friends, my friend was not successful. Honestly surgery is just something to assist you, if you still eat too much or eat like crap you will not lose the weight and you will get sick because your stomach can't handle it. My friend lost weight at first but did not change her lifestyle and therefore the surgery has been a waste and she is bigger than before now. My point is that it that it doesn't always work unless the person changes their lifestyle too. I'm not opposed to it, but I am skeptical of it. Is this something that you are considering?

So ladies, I have a question for ya'll... Have any of you done a BD shoot? I am going to do one with TammyB in Chicago I think and I am nervous as hell! I have lost a lot of weight but I'm no where near "let's get naked and take pictures" shape! lol I still want to do it for FI because he loves every curvy I have but I am sooooo nervous! I figure what better motivation for the next couple months though! So my question is have any of you done one and how did you feel about the pictures after? Were you surprised, did you like them?

steph, there is also a guy i work with who had it done and was still trying to shove down buckets of KFC just a few weeks afterward. obviously, he only lost minimal weight (maybe 40 lbs when he was well over 350 to start) and then gained it all back, plus.

this is why i said i would never get the surgery. my reasons for overeating have absolutely nothing to do "stomach capacity" and that is the *only* thing surgery alone can change.

i think it's amazing that you've lost 40 lbs in little over 6 months! woot.gif also i am so very proud of you for getting up the nerve to do BD! you are my sexy little hero today! keep it up! bunny_4.gif

Hi Lisa,

First of all, I want to say that your wedding pictures look absolutely beautiful! You are a gorgeous bride :)

As for the gastric bypass surgery, my mom just got that done in December and she has lost over 30 lbs already. At the same time, she can never really enjoy a normal meal again. If her portions are too big, she gets nauseous and sometimes vomits, and she has to take nutritional supplements for the rest of her life. But her diabetes has drastically improved and we are optimistic that her overall health will be better in the long run.

I don't think a drastic measure such as surgery is warranted unless there are other serious health conditions in the picture. But when the risks of surgery are outweighed by the risks of doing nothing, then I think that is something to consider. I believe cougs posted accurate information in that you need to be at least 100 lbs overweight and have other health issues, etc. You also need to demonstrate that you have tried other methods of losing weight and dieting and that surgery is pretty much a final option.

Anyways, aside from all that, I just wanted to say hi to the Curvacious ladies out there, as I am also on the curvy side and trying to lose some weight (yay for BDW biggest loser!). Great thread and it's nice to see such a supportive group of women :)
