Gran Bahia Principe Akumal/Tulum/Coba - POST HERE!

Recommended Posts

Yikes! I must admit that I'm a little scared now about our restaurant choice. We chose Tortuga for our reception as our only options were Tequila or Tortuga. The rodizio style seemed like a unique experience.......and we thought the food would be good.

Has anyone else ate at Tortuga?? Maybe they just had an off night??

I read somewhere that you weren't allowed to hook up your own ipod, but that was way back on the first 100 pages of this thread (2007...) so things may have changed now, it sounds like. If we can get away with using our own ipod I would love it.... way cheaper for one thing, and it leaves us in control of the tunes which I also like :)

I was wondering, what type of service was included with your cocktail reception. Did they put up cocktail tables or anything? Decorations? Lights? A bartender and server? And most importantly (according to my fiancee) what kind of drinks did they serve?

Thanks!
Yep they set up the Poolside cocktail party with lights, tables and chairs, tableclothes, candles, a bar and bartender. We choose the simplest bar menu which was wine, beer, pina Coladas and Margaritas for $8 per person for 2 hours :-) We also cut our cake there, so we had a chance to let our dessert settle.

We also have chosen Tortuga... after reading this thread (all 200ish pages) I was sold... there were many great reviews of this restaurant. I especially love the fact that the food is pretty much endless so no one will go hungry and that there are many different options... so hopefully something there is something for everyone.

I agree that the unique experience is a plus...

If you email your WC I'm sure they'll send you the same pics they sent me... looks very nice... cocktail tables with white linens, white chairs, white lights, a nice bar area, etc.

I received a price list for drinks. Here is is:

National Bar:
Beer, Rum, Vodka, Tequila, Cocktails, Gin, Whisky
17US$/per person/per hour
extra hour: 12 US$/per person/ per hr

International Bar:
Beer, Tequila, Rum, Vodka Absolute, Whisky JW, Chivas Regal, Cutty Sark, Cocktails, Gin Beefeater, wine of the house, sparkling wine
24 USD/ per person/per hour
extra hour: 18 US$/per person/per hr

Special Cocktails:
Beer, Piña Colada Cocktail, Margarita Cocktail & Sparkling Wine,
5 USD/ per person/per hour
extra hour: 3 US$/ per person/per hour

I do have a question for those that have had the "special cocktails" bar... This is by far the best price...but obviously very limiting. Did someone say that if you tip well they'll get other types of drinks? I've got a vodka/water type grandma wink.gif

Thanks!!

Yes my group a tipped and they were able to get what they wanted. Others chose to walk to the lobby bar and get a glass full of in our case tequila (they wanted top shelf) so they could do shots, but I bet you could get glasses of Vodka and bring them out the lobby bar at the Akumal section was close to the pool side.

I just got married at the Tulum on the 4th and we have dinner at the Gran Tortuga. Everyone loved it. There are tons of different kinds of meat and there is an appetizer buffet, so there was something for everyone.

My wedding was on November 4, and I just got back late Sunday night. Everything went well, except for the rain. We did manage to get our ceremony and pictures outside before the rain started up again, but our poolside reception had to be indoors sad.gif The room that they put us in was the basement of the hotel and it was really lame. It totally reminded me of a high school dance. The room was really tacky and the only decorations they put up were ballons. The DJ was playing the worst music ever. My dad and father in law had to pull the DJ aside and tell him to change up the music he was playing. If I knew what I knew now, I would have cancelled the "poolside" reception and just went to the lobby bar. It would have been free and not high school dance lame.

Also, Jazmin screwed up my wedding time. We were supposed to get married at 3pm and she confirmed it in emails. I guess she forgot to tell the minister because he had us scheduled for 4pm and he was not available 3pm. So we had to scramble to tell all of our guests and contact the photographer to let him know the change in times. Make sure you confirm your time with the wedding coordinator multiple times.

Besides that, everything went well. I'll try to post a review when I get the chance.

Great to hear about Tortuga! Thanks for taking the time to give us your little review. Sorry to hear about the high school dance atmosphere, but hopefully other things made it very memorable for you.

Thanks for sharing we don't want to end up with that scenario, also due to the extra cost I think we will not be doing a poolside reception, hubby to be wont budge on that.

Once all our group arrives we are planning to have a welcome reception on our second night to greet our guests and give OOT gifts to the group. We were looking for a bar to have cocktails where we can talk to everyone. Karla suggested the Daquiri bar and apparently has live music each night.

Anyone have any comments about this bar or suggestions for us. Thanks
