I really just can't believe how DW's bring out the crazy in folks!!! It's unbelievable. I feel so bad for the OP. While I have come to realize that my wedding is about what me and my FI want, I have to admit, if my mother could not attend....I would be devastated. Maybe I grew up lucky, but I can't imagine a parent not moving heaven and earth to be present when their child gets married!!! That is unforgivable to me.

Honestly....you are in between a rock and a hard place. In the end, it sounds as if your mother unfortunately has issues...don't let her ruin your day. Do what you feel is right in your heart. Perhaps you can reach out personally to your siblings and ask them would they attend even if your mother does not.

I wish you all the best.

I hope that you're Mom comes around and that things get better for you. I think that a lot of people do get this kind of reaction when they first start planning a DW- she may think she'll be able to change your mind this way, or maybe she does mean it. I think that if you'll truly regret not doing your wedding the way you want it you should seriously think about a DW. It sounds like you may have some trouble with your mother whatever you wind up choosing to do, honestly, so maybe it's better to just be firm about having it your way from the beginning. Good luck with whatever you decide! smile03.gif

I'm so sorry to hear that. My parents are terrified of flying and traveling but have been behind me form the beginning...I have a very large family filled with some "interesting characters" which helped them understand and agree with our choice to get out of the country HA HA. We haven't been so lucky with my fiances parents and family. It's been a fight every step of the way, everything is booked and they are STILL trying to cahnge our minds... and although at times I worried it would cause problems between my fiance and I it ended up bringing us even closer. We have stuck to our guns and I have amazing girlfriends that have reminded me that's it's all about him and I and THAT'S IT. That's all you have to keep in mind but I know it's not easy. Just have a big party when you get back with all the people that couldn't make it...you'll be the beautiful new bride with the glorious tan!

at first my FI's mother complained and complained about us having a DW, i changed my mind and was going to have it here in my hometown. i talked to my mom and she told me to not let anyone to change my mind and it was MY wedding, not hers. I agreed with her so i told my FI that i didn't want to get married here so we stuck with it and told his parents to accept it. They dont have to come. they are coming after all...my mom is sooo scared of flying but she just booked her trip so my parents are coming. i'm so happy and i dont know if i could still get married without my mom!

hope your mom will come around.

I feel your pain!!

My wedding isnâ€t planned till April 2011 and I know once the STDs are sent out, ALL HELL IS GONNA BREAK LOOSE!! Im not engaged yet so when I mentioned to my mom that we were considering getting married and if we did, it would be in Mexico, the complaining began. Im TOTALLY ok with my family not showing up becuz im not that close to my family, but soon to be FI is close to his family and when they start b*tching, it is gonna stress him out. Im pretty sure he is gonna try to talk me into changing the location but NOPE, Iâ€m not. This will be his 2nd marriage/wedding, my 1st. Hell, they went to the 1st one he had, whatâ€s the big deal?!?!

So sorry to hear that sad.gif .. People sometimes come around and change their minds. A DW is always hard as far as who's coming and who says initially that they wont come and then end up showing up. Honestly if a DW is what you want i would just say to go for it and the people who can be there will be there..
