Plus Size Brides- Sample Sizes for Us?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am a plus size bride and will soon start looking for a dress here in NYC. I wear about a 16W street size or 18 or 20 misses street size. It is my understanding that David's Bridals has a large selection of sample sizes in our sizes. Is that true? Also, what about Kleinfeld's? I am waffling about going to Kleinfelds because I am wondering if they have more than a few sample sizes that will fit.

Any recommendations for shops that have plus-sise sample sizes to try on? Thanks.

Any plus size brides out there? I need suggestions if you have them of where to look for dresses. I am actually watching "Say Yes to the Dress" now and they have a plus size bride and they have plus size samples, so that answers that.

I would still love to hear about other suggestions of where to look for a dress...thanks!!

Try calling the bridal shops and asking if they carry plus size samples. It took a few calls, but I found 3 or 4 in the Portland/Seattle area that carried a large selection, and about another 8 shops that carried a "few" in my size.

I think searching around is definately worth it. I found a few gowns at David's that were in 500-800 range, but those in no way compared to the $400 gowns I found at the shops and the $700 -$800 gowns blew those out of the water. Its worth some time to search b/c you will be a LOT happier with your gown when your day comes.

When I call I usually ask the following questions:

Do you carry plus size gowns I can try on?

How many and what general size?

(if there are only a couple of gowns, I usually follow up with) what maker and style?

Hope this helps!

Oh, and don't forget, they can clip the dress just as they do with the regular sample sizes for the little girls. I am a size 22 in wedding dresses and found that sizes 24 and 26 were still revealing about how much I liked the style on my body.

I am less sure about trying on dresses that are "close" but too small. I could easily see what a 20 looked like, but when I went down more than a size, it no longer fit in the bust and was very difficult to judge.

Thank you so much for your input. I guess I really should just call around. I also like the advice about clipping in a too big gown to see.
