There are few things in life more enjoyable than a good ol' romantic comedy. And for fans of the genre, the icing on top is a rom' com with a fantastic, gorgeous, over the top wedding scene. They're great for ideas and inspiration or even just fantasy viewing (we can't all be Carrie Bradshaw, am I right?) We thought it might be fun to put together a list of the best wedding scenes in some of our favorite movies. And have no fear, rom' com haters: we even have some dramas and a tween fantasy movie thrown in for good measure. Check out the list below and let us know if we forgot one of your favorite movies/scenes!
Best Dress: Vera Wang x2 in Bride Wars
OK, this is kind of a cheat, because we're really picking two fabulous dresses, but can you blame us? Both gowns are from wedding gown queen Vera Wang. One is a gorgeous princess style, accented with a lavender sash, the other a sexy mermaid with ruching.
Best Officiant: The Princess Bride
There’s nothing more beautiful than wuv, true wuv. And if you get that line, then you've seen this movie and are very familiar with one of the most memorable wedding officiants ever put on film. Watch as Princess Buttercup is forced to marry Prince Humperdink while her true wuv, Westley, is en route to try and save her.
Best Vows: The Vow
It should come as no surprise that a movie named The Vow' wins the award for best movie wedding vows. (Also, we'll take any excuse to feature a clip with Channing Tatum.) Although he's not in his 'Magic Mike' costume here, he's still pretty darn cute when professing his love to movie wife Rachel McAdams with a beautiful and heartfelt speech. Rachel holds her own and delivers sweet, simple and funny vows of her own.
Best Venue: The Forest in Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 1
Let's be clear here: one member of the happy couple is a hundred year old a vampire, and the other is still in high school. To call this an unconventional pairing is an understatement. But these two crazy lovebirds throw one of the most picturesque fantasy weddings we've seen on film. A secluded forest with a giant wisteria tree sets the scene for this rustic yet romantic wedding. Side note: Edward and Bella also get an honorable mention for best kiss. Steamy! Turns out when you’re a couple in real life (they were at the time of filming, but have since broken up) it makes for a pretty believable movie kiss!
Best Bridesmaid: Katherine Heigl in 27 Dresses
When looking for a bridesmaid we obviously want to have our closest friends as our support system, and if they happen to also be generally appeasing and up for anything, all the better! No one fits this description more than Katherine Heigl's character, who has been a bridesmaid in a jaw-dropping 27 weddings. This dress-up scene where Katherine models all of her dresses makes her the ultimate bridesmaid. She’s done it 27 times, guys! And she's still a great bridesmaid and friend to her sister in the movie who is planning to marry Katherine’s boss, who Katherine is secretly in love with. How selfless! And awkward, definitely awkward.
Best Father: Steve Martin in Father of the Bride
If you have a special relationship with your father, then you probably love this scene from Father of the Bride where Steve Martin's character has an internal monologue explaining a father's feelings while giving away his little girl. So sweet!
Best Wedding Speech: Dueling Speeches in Bridsemaids
If you're lucky enough to have two best friends, hopefully they don't fight over you in a game of "no, I know her best!" while toasting you and your betrothed. But if they do, let's hope it's as funny as this hilarious scene from Bridesmaids.
Best Kiss: The Wedding Singer
The award for this one goes to The Wedding Singer, simply for introducing us to the phrase "church tongue." No one wants to be that couple looking like they need a room while standing at the altar. Watch as Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler perfect the art of a perfectly sweet and appropriate wedding kiss in this scene.
Best Wedding Surprise: Pop-Up Serenade in Love Actually
Question: what could be more exciting than saying your "I dos" and turning to walk back up the aisle, only to be stopped by an impromptu serenade? Answer: nothing, that's what. This is one of our favorite scenes in a movie filled with favorite scenes (by the way, does anyone else share the opinion that a romantic comedy + a Christmas movie = basically the best thing ever?) And here's a fun fact: this scene was inspired by the funeral of beloved puppeteer Jim Henson, which Richard Curtis, the writer/director of Love Actually attended. At the funeral, all of the puppeteers brough their Muppets and sang a song to pay tribute to Jim.
* yep, that's the guy from The Walking Dead!
Best Soundtrack: My Best Friend's Wedding
Arguably one of the best romantic comedies of all time, this movie has too many good scenes to pick one, so we're going to give it the award of best soundtrack. The restaurant scene where the entire cast breaks into a chorus of "Say a Little Prayer" is worth the price of admission alone. Watch it below and rest assured that there are plenty of other worthy musical moments in this '90s gem that has so far stood up remarkably well to the test of time. And for what it's worth, Love Actually ranks a close second for best soundtrack!
Best Wedding Photography: Carrie's Vogue Photoshoot in Sex and the City
We’d expect nothing less from TV’s ultimate fashionista, Carrie Bradshaw. But still, the epic montage scene from the first Sex and the City movie showing Carrie in several designer gowns, each one more gorgeous than the last, plays like a fantasy dream sequence for brides-to-be. Um, where do we sign up for a photoshoot with Vogue?
Best Party: Any Party Attended by the Wedding Crashers
Admit it: You’ve totally wanted to crash a wedding before. And that’s why every party scene in Wedding Crashers is the best wedding party movie scene. They look like they’re having so much fun!
Best Wedding Stories: When Harry Met Sally
So you're married, now what? Now you grow old together, and maybe one day adorably tell the story of how you met and fell in love. That's exactly what these couples do in this clip from When Harry Met Sally, which in our humble opinion is one of the best movies ever, period.
