Cabo Resort Update List (Hurricane Odile)

TammyWright

We know that many of you are scrambling in response to the tragedy that Hurricane Odile has brought to Cabo San Lucas — one of our most popular wedding destinations. In an attempt to quickly answer some questions, we’ve compiled as many updates from resorts as we could, including some helpful excerpts from our forum. We hope this answers some questions about the situation in Cabo, availability of resorts and reopening timeframes.

*A warning that this is our best guess of what has been going on as communication with the resorts is understandably spotty.

**Clients scheduling weddings with our sister travel agency (Wright Travel Agency) at Cabo resorts have been successfully moved to sister resorts in Cancun, Riviera Maya, or Puerto Vallarta.

What our forum brides are saying:

“MT” (who is/was planning on getting married at Sandos Finisterra) says: “I was able to find a couple of pictures of my resort and the damage was pretty bad. I told FI that maybe we should reschedule for another resort and he was resistant as he told me that we were going to get married in February in Cabo as we love Cabo and we loved all of the hardworking people we have met in Cabo. I know rebuilding the town will not happen in 5 short months, but going to Cabo, donating some money to relief, bringing some clothing which I was going to give to the local thrift stores and bringing our little bit of business there will help. I want to help so badly, as I just cannot fathom what the locals are going through.”

“ST” (had a destination wedding at Dreams Los Cabos in May, 2014) says: “The airport is also closed to further notice. The airport is in super BAD Shape. Thousands of people lost their homes as well. I know some resorts are offering future brides [sister resorts] I also believe they are also letting you cancel your reservations without any penalty and allowing future brides to change their wedding dates. (I saw this for Dreams but more than likely all resorts will probably be the same)

I hope this was some type help and sorry if I said things you guys probably didn’t want to hear but I know I would of wanted to hear this if my wedding was coming up.”

“J0” (wedding planned for 10/3 at Villa Del Arco) says: “My wedding was supposed to be held at Villa del palmar and arco on 10/3..... It said it had minimal damage but from what I've seen in pictures, it doesn't look minimal. A travel agent has advised we cancel all together. many of my guests booked a while ago and they may not get refunds on their flights since their travel dates fall outside their time frame which I feel terrible. I hope they can get their money back. I haven’t heard any word back from both resorts and it’s just devastating to go out there for a wedding when they have much more to worry about. People have lost everything.

I hope everyone here gets the wedding they have all hoped for. My prayers go out to all tourists and locals in Cabo right now. Cabo is such a beautiful place.....”

“MM” (wedding planned for 10/25 at Hilton Los Cabos) says: “In fact, I only learned from a guest who only just got out of the hotel and home that the resort wasn't planning on opening until months after my planned wedding”

“DV” says: “As of this morning I officially confirmed with the wedding coordinator, Meriam, at the Sandos Cancun that they have our wedding date available and in the process of moving all the rooms for me. She also asked me to send over everything I have arranged with Lupita since there is no internet or cell service into Cabo. I joined a group on Facebook that is fairly accurate with updates and it looks like it may be weeks before they are ready to take any sort of guests. I have spent the afternoon contacting airlines and they have been more than helpful, all have waived transfer fees for me. I also am looking for a photographer. I am really worried I might lose my deposit with the photographer in Cabo. That would be a lot of money to be out, but in the end all that matters is that my wedding happens, everyone has fun and is safe. Praying for those in Cabo.”

“HQ”(wedding planned for 6/22/15 in at Sandos Finisterra in Cabo San Lucas) says: “I am sure there are others out there that have been watching the news on the hurricane which just passed through Cabo. From what I have read, there were approximately 135 people treated for injuries and no reported deaths (thank God!). After all of this information was confirmed, I was determined to find some information on the resort’s status. Unfortunately, the resort where we booked our wedding just two weeks ago was hit very hard. The Sandos Finisterra stated that they are no longer accepting reservations from this day forward and that any future reservations will be offered to stay at a sister resort. If anyone else finds anything online that they wouldn't mind sharing with us Cabo brides I would greatly appreciate it. Such devastating news for such a beautiful place! I hope that the death toll does in fact stay at zero and that this community gets all of the aid and support that is needed.”

I'm so sorry for the brides that are being affected by this disaster in Cabo, and heartbroken for the people there that have their lives destroyed. My husband and I have been to Cabo a couple of times and absolutely love it. The people are wonderful and go out of their way to make you feel welcome. We've wandered the streets and found little out of the way shops and restaurants and loved every minute! I know they will rebuild the resorts since Cabo relies so heavily on the tourist industry, but I also hope that the people there are able to rebuild the little that they have too. I did read that a couple of the resorts had set up trust funds for their employees to rebuild. I hope the brides affected are able to work out something with your resort so that you still somehow are able to have the wedding you were hoping for!
