Roatan, Honduras?

Recommended Posts

My sister and I are thinking about making this our "destination" to hit next year...flights are reasonable and there are some awesome looking villas ( like this one Home) that are dirt cheap ($1250/week) and sleep 4...so we can split that cost between 2 couples! We're totally cool with doing our own groceries and making our own food so even that would be cheap enough.

We both want to get certified to scuba as well so we thought we could do our in class part here and then our open dives there because it's supposed to be a great place to dive.

Has anyone ever visited Roatan or anywhere else in Honduras? What did you think of it?

I visited Honduras when I was a teenager. I went to Tegucigalpa (sp?) for a wedding. I went with friends of mine who have family there. I don't know anything about Roatan but I had a good time when I was there. I didn't really do sightseeing, I only hung out with my friends' families.

I could be wrong about this but I think in 2007 Honduras was voted the poorest country in the world. (I think Haiti is usually number one). Its very poor and things there are dirt cheap. I remember seeing children begging for coins and it just broke my heart. One time I bought all these neighborhood kids ice cream (there was like 48 of them) and it literally cost me like $5 (american dollars) It was really sad to see children suffering like this.

The country is very warm and I think it has beautiful mountains. I'm not familiar with Roatan so I am no help there but I think you will enjoy it. Its not your typical tropical paradise vacation but its very relaxing and I swear you feel at peace there. I think you and your sister will have so much fun!

My boyfriend went there for five weeks and he stayed at Anthony's key resort. He told me it was awesome! The dive are really nice there! You can even dive with dolphin!

We're suppose to spend a few weeks there next year!! I can't wait to visit this place...

Yup, I was just there two years ago. It's BEAUTIFUL! But it is VERY poor. It will break your heart to see the children out selling items. The cutest child I have ever seen was standing behind our van by himself. I walked up to him and offered him my tootsie roll that I was about to eat. I've never seen such pure excitement on a child's face before.

If you are going for diving... it's amazing! Well, as long as the weather is nice. We went snorkeling during a storm and it was AWFUL! Since it's all mountainous the rain water washes mud into the sea making it impossible to see anything for quite some time. But, if you are diving you'll probably go out a lot further than I did.

Oh, and expect to see a lot of machine guns! There are guards standing with them everywhere!

So funny I found this because DH and I were talking about Honduras the other day. He said how everyone goes to the same places to vacation and why don't we go somewhere like Honduras or Guatemala. My first (and ignorant) reaction was "Why stop there, let's vacation in sunny San Salvador or Darfur" LOL No offense to anyone Salvadorean or Sudanese, I know people from both places and they won't even go back (well one of them is banned but that's another story).

I looked online to humor him and found Roatan and it looks beautiful!! Although I know it is a poor country and your stories about the kids are sooo sad :o( Looks like a great place to dive or just lounge on the beach, and I'm sure that tourist money is much needed.
