Not that I am condoning smoking, drinking or drugs while pregnant but..... I sometimes work with neonatal babies and it seems to me that those babies do better when born early than those whose moms made all the right choices. Maybe those babies are born with more fight in them? It seems unfair to me!

ps congrats and good luck with your little bundle! enjoy your sleep now and cherish the sleepless nights to come.

hmm, i wonder if maybe if they are born prematurely (as is said to be an effect of smoking) they do better because they are removed from what is considered a toxic in-utero environment into a healthier one? that's the only reason i can think of anyway! it's funny how things work.

and thank you!!! i wish i could enjoy my sleep, i'm already having sleepness nights due to a combo of excitement and pure discomfort. but naps are always a nice quick fix!

OK I hope I don't offend any smokers on here but it really ticks me off when I see Mom's holding their newborn babies puffing on a ciggarette and blowing it right in the babies face.... SEROUSLY!!! Ever since i moved down here to the south i've seen this happenning alot and it makes me so mad.

had to get it off my chest. thanks

I have come to think of it as simple evolution.... the babies that are born to addicted mothers will never have the support they need - and therefore throw everything they have at surviving each day. On the other hand, the babies that are given love and support and every chance to thrive know that they have a lot of love behind them and can take it easy knowing that they have love and prayers to get them through the early times and save their greatness for later in life.

Jessica, I have been reading a lot on this forum lately.... I can say that I do not truely know you. As a remote stranger I have felt the IMPACT of you in a truely positive manner. Thank you for reaching out to so many!

I can't wait to see pics of your little one!

Good point. I've seen this before too....and if I'm being honest - and I don't mean to offend smokers or nonsmokers - it perpetuates the stereotypes of where she lives. I think someone in CA caught doing that would be brought up on charges. In VA it is printed in the paper with no mention of the fact that she is smoking while complaining about fetal noise damage. It's not like it was an article from the 70s, this was 2004!
