Wow, this thread is educational. Too bad we didn't have this on going BEFORE WE MOVED TO WASHINGTON!! Being a native Cali girl, none of this makes any sense whatsoever. We've actually considered driving to the next state to buy liquor until I decided to investigate the situation. Yeah, both Idaho to our east & Oregon to our south are control states.

 

I thought it was awesome in Arizona where they have drive thru liquor stores. So, you could buy liquor & smokes at a drive up window, all the while you can have 2 guns strapped to your leg.

 

Apparently there are 18 states that participate in the "control" of alcohol. Here's a nice little blurb about why this is:

 

The control jurisdictions represent 28% of the nation's population (1997) and account for 25% of its sales of distilled spirits. In the regulation of alcohol beverages, they are the alternative to the license states -- where wholesale and retail sales of distilled spirits and wine are wholly in the hands of private sellers. By the participating in the marketplace, the control jurisdictions are able to serve their citizens with a broader and more flexible range of policy options for promoting moderation in the consumption of alcohol beverages and for reducing alcohol abuse. By keeping liquor out of the private marketplace, no economic incentives are created to maximize sales, open more liquor stores or sell to underage persons. Instead, all policy incentives to promote moderation and to enforce existing liquor laws are enhanced.

Yup, the liquor laws SUCK in some states! David and I actually drove to our favorite liquor store the other day (yes, we have a favorite. lol!) which is like 15 miles from where we live. (yes, it is DUMB to drive that far.) We're thinking it will be packed because it's the day before Christmas eve and we're sure everyone and their mother is out buying their holiday booze. Nope. The place is deserted. Not a car in sight. Then is slowly dawns on us....it's Sunday. Freakin' Sunday and we can't buy our Christmas booze!!! LoL! We felt like idiots for not realizing what day it was BEFORE we drove all that way. Then we spent the ride home bitching about how stupid the laws are while I remembered fondly my few years living in CA where I could, indeed, go to Safeway and buy Grey Goose if my little heart so desired.

 

Whats even worse, IMO, is the whole situation in Oklahoma. Not only do they have the dumb laws about where and when liquor can be sold...but the beer actually has a lower alcohol content than the beer in Texas! lol! Whenever we go camping up there we always make sure to stock up on beer in Texas so we won't have to buy any there...it just feels like you're getting jipped when your beer has like a 1/3 less alcohol than normal! lol!

We are having a NY bonfire. I have some awesome sparkling wines, red wines and white wines as well as beer and more liquor than we could possibly need. But no special recipes -- although there are some awesome ones on here I might need to try!!!!

Interesting tidbit Christa, I'm learning a lot here too. Rachelle what a pain that you drove there and it was Sunday....gosh that would suck ( Funny about OK, I just heard on the radio that Utah also has beer with lower alcohol content.

Oh, and Tami your bonfire sounds like it will be awesome...reminds me of the end of waiting to exhale when they are drinking around the bonfire on nye...lol

Wow, I never knew the rules were so different everywhere!! Up until a few years ago you couldn't buy beer on sundays, but now you can. There is one grocery store here that sells beer & wine, no liquor, but the majority of grocery stores do not sell any alcohol.

We can buy beer and wine at gas stations and convenience stores, until 11 pm most nights, but liquor stores are only open until 10. I guess whereever you are though, you just adjust, and you know when you have to stock up ahead of time, lol!

I can't imagine living in a dry town!!

I bought the cranberry infusion flavor yesterday - wanted pomegranate, but they didn't have it. Ummm, so basically it just makes the drink so yummy that by the time you sit down with one it's time to get up & make another. DANGEROUS!!
